i just checked the status of a book I requested and this is what it says:

  Detailed Results:
Bullet Dead Mail / Sent to Mail Recovery Center
Bullet Processed through Sort Facility, January 07, 2010, 12:01 am, GREENSBORO, NC 27495
Bullet Processed through Sort Facility, January 06, 2010, 12:42 am, JERSEY CITY, NJ 07097
Bullet Electronic Shipping Info Received, January 03, 2010

So......should I kiss this book good-bye?

Why would you think the book is not coming when it's clearly being scanned along the way?  It was only mailed 10 days ago.  PBS gives 26 days for a reason.

I've never seen that "Dead Mail/Sent to MRC" status before.  I hope someone else can be more helpful.  I would probably call my local P.O. and ask what that means for ever getting the book.

Most likely the package was damaged and your address is no longer showing. Otherwise, the usps would repack it and send it on its way. If the sender fills out a Mail Loss / Rifling Report, there's a chance the usps will find the book and send it to you. I've had one on its way to me that ended up as Dead Mail . Unfortunately in my case, the sender had already gotten credit for it and didn't feel the need to respond to my PM requesting the form be filled out. I'm assuming they never bothered to complete the form because I never got the book.

Since they were able to scan the book, the DC was intact so maybe (hopefully?) the information the USPS has on DCs will give the Mail Recovery people enough to send it on to you. I wouldn't hold my breath on it though. The sender could also fill out the forms for lost mail and see if they can track it down that way and recover it.

I missed that part.  It may show up. I had one that I sent that said "Return to Sender" or something like that.  It got delivered just fine. I pm'd the requestor to ask if there was an address problem or something. But no it was delivered and the scan still showed that it was enroute back to me.

What Dawn said, ask your local post office.  They will have more info, and will know what it means and your options.

Thanks everyone.  I'll ask at my post office and contact the sender and see if she is willing to fill out the forms.

This might mean that the wrapper was cut open.  Or the label got wet.  So they would have to bag it in one of those plastic apology bags.  (The Dead Letter office does specialize in reading messed up labels.)

Is THAT what that means??  I mailed out a book a few weeks ago and it showed up back in my mailbox with MRC written across the front.  I took it back to the post office (after PMing the member to make sure they still wanted it...oddly, it had been mailed like a week before so who knows what travels it took).  They said there was nothing wrong with it and to hand it back over to them to remail.  The member received it a week later.
