Does anyone have recommendations on books about teaching and parenting extremely bright kids. I have a son who I strongly suspect is very bright (too bright) and I want to read up on the subject before I talk to his new teacher and the principal. He will be starting 4th grade - the earliest grade his school is willing to test or deal with gifted or very bright kids. He spent last year reading comic books and taking things apart. He read Nero Wolfe and Sherlock Holmes at home and then did book reports on Magic Tree house books for his teacher. He did fabulous work when he paid attention long enough to realize an assignment was due. His state test scores are very high. Help! Thanks Jane

I would speak to the Gifted and Talented specialist in the school or county/district if possible. They know what to look for in gifted children and can be a great resource for you!!

Being a parent of a young child that I think is gifted too, I understand where you are coming from.  Keep your child motivated and challenge him when needed.  I googled gifted children and came up with a wealth of information.  On the assignments that are due try using an assingment poster that is highly visable.  Franklin Covey is a great sourse for getting anyone organized.

I hope this helps and that is not to late in getting to you...

The best teacher resource for GATE kids I have found (I am a GATE teacher and a GATE Coordinator) is called Teaching Gifted Kids in the Regular Classroom. ( cannot remember the author, but the book is bright orange, It gives multiple strategies for how teachers can differentiate for GATE kids. Also, look into the research of Sandra Kaplan, specifically the GATE depth/complexity/novelty icons/strategies. THAT is the way to teach GATE kids. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I would be happy to help.
