I've started working to rally folks with kids books to give away to help out the Athens, GA schools get through the Summer slide. You can read more about it here: http://booksforkeeps.blogspot.com/.
In addition to using my own points, i'm hoping to get some people to use theirs to find books in good condition that they're willing to send on (either to me, or directly to BfK) that can be donated to these kids, some of who do not own, and never have, even one book.
Books were my lifeline as a kid, and I want to be able to keep that lifeline alive in these days of budget cuts which usually hit the library first.
So, I got my first bunch of books collected for the Books for Keeps group, and I wanted to put out a reminder to everybody about recent, good condition, childrens books from 1st-12th grades. (The HS kids seem to be reading more adult stuff, though.)
Check out their progress and continuing needs here: www.booksforkeeps.blogspot.com and if you have something they're looking for, you can send it to them, directly, or send it to me, and I'll pack it up with my next bunch.
Thanks to Winston and Sassy for your kind support!!
I wanted to bump this thread up with an update for 2012.
BFK has their own PBS account now, but since they have limited points here, I think they are going to mostly use it for extremely high demand books that are hard to get like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series: http://booksforkeeps.paperbackswap.com/profile/
They have greatly expanded the number of students they are going to help in 2012, which means they need a lot more books! 82,044 books to be exact.
You can help by donating points or sending them books that they need! Check out their needs and find out more about them at http://www.booksforkeeps.org/ and a more detailed description of what books are in demand here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/122688
They do have a lot of points on Bookmooch, so if you have books that meet their needs, you could earn points for them that way.
And while the title of this thread is about chapter books for grades 2-5 they also need books for younger students as well, see the LT thread above.
Bumping this thread again. It looks like PBS suspended BFK's account which is a real shame, but PBS members can still help out this charity in a number of ways:
- If you have multiple books that are in good condition and in demand by BFK and you'd like to get a point or two for them, PM me and I will see what I can work out with my points.
- You can send books directly to them in Georgia. Although the books they need the most are often wishlisted here, there are still plenty of other books that they can use that are plentiful here and may have been sitting on your shelf for awhile, and it's always nice to know your books are going directly to a good cause, rather than sitting on the shelf at a thrift store.
- See their website for information about donating financially or through other book trading websites: http://booksforkeeps.blogspot.com/
Their two biggest needs at the moment (besides money) are graphic novels: http://booksforkeeps.blogspot.com/2012/10/student-feedback-1-graphic-novels.html and current books about certain sports and athletes: http://booksforkeeps.blogspot.com/2012/11/student-feedback-2-athletes-and-sports.html
