I have been jonesing for some good fantasy while waiting for the fifth book to come out.  Any suggestions of books of a similar style and theme?

Try one of these series:

The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone by Greg Keyes

Tyrants and Kings by John Marco

Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

Brenda, do those books have much magic or goblins/elves, etc etc?? I've read the Martin books, and I thoroughly enjoyed them, but the lack of magic was a little disappointing.....There were dragons, and the weird un-dead creatures, but that seemed about it.

There may be a bit more magic in the Greg Keyes series, but not as much as it sounds like you're looking for.  The second two series I think focus more on politics and war, much like the Song of Ice and fire series.  I think what you're looking for is high fantasy, and these books really aren't.

Have you read the Codex Alera by Jim Butcher?  I'm only on the first, Furies of Calderon, but I see some similarities.
