Jack McMorrow makes a pit stop in Scanesett while researching a travel article on Benedict Arnold's 1775 march ot Quebec. When a man calling himself P. Ray Mantis fails to rejoin his tour bus for Canada, Jack sticks around out of curiosity to talk to a slow-witted boy and his only slightly swifter sister, who seeem to know something about 'the bus man.' Jack's assignment to retrace Arnold's historic footsteps has him on the road, but he keeps doubling back to Scanesett, where he is threatened, hunted, beaten up, and otherwise forced to play a role in a redneck game of hide-and-seek.
