Despite the fact that this book dealt with many serious issues, it was surprisingly funny and loose. The lead character, Dave Evers, after his failure to have a successful career, was looking for simplicity in a small town and what he found was a series of misadventures that were sometimes serious, sometimes ridiculing and sometimes funny. From the real meaning of success, to teenage pregnancy, fate and destiny, karmic possibilities, to death and murder, this book touches these in one form or the other.
Daves main protagonist is his half brother who was later the suspect in a murder Dave was too close to. While Dave was the character with flaws and failure, his older successful half brother was a detached, aloof intellectual. The dialogues are great, especially those between the brothers.
There was this funny part about two unalike goat thieves that I thought was just to funny up the adventures but found out it had a role in the murder. The writer was able to blend serious conversations and scenes with funny ones as well. I recommend this book because it is eerily life like, laughable and serious at the same time. It is Dew Platts most thought provoking yet. Surprisingly, it is also her funniest. And there was something about the mixture of the two that makes the book memorable.
