From back cover of book...
I clung to the rails, inhaling great gulps of salty air, my stomach making an uneasy flip with each slap of wave. It was mid-April. In Philidelphia the first colorful buds would be pushing up their heads, but here at sea, gray gloomy skies marked the horizon. I pulled my cape tightly against the icy wind, remembering Miss Hepplewhite's Helpful Hints on Travel.
"Remember Jane, a good taveler need only know three things. One, always keep your composure. Two, dress plainly and pack lightly. Three, do not let little irritations sway your cheery nature," Miss Hepplewhite had said, patting my shoulder.
She had, in my opinion, been a bit remiss in not mentioning any hints on killing fleas, avoiding rats, bathing with seawater, or being seasick.

Amazing! It gives a taste of what it was like for a girl to live in the 1800's. Good for girls ages 10-11+ Its about a girl named Jane, who lives in Pennsylvania with her father (a doctor) she grows up to be a very nice young lady, and then she boards a ship spends a long while on it going to the frontier, then she survives there for about 6 months, while being plagued with bad luck the whole time. She messes up almost every chapter, but in the end, end's up a courageous, witty and semi-self controlled young lady. I highly suggest this book!! If you have any questions on it you can PM me! :)

This is a young adult book which I read as an adult. I found it pretty predictable but still very satisfying. Jane is a likable character and I enjoyed spending time with her. I would have really loved this book at age 13 or so! Probably would have seemed a lot less predictable if I was that age - I've had a good 30 years of active reading since I was the age this book was intended for. Recommended.

"16-year-old Jane Peck has ventured to the unknown wilds of the Pacific Northwest to wed her childhood idol, William Baldt. But her impeccable training at Miss Heppelwhite's Young Ladies Academy in Philadelphia is hardly preparation for the rough pioneer life and colorful characters that await her in Washington Territory.

As Jane awaits her absentee fiance's arrival, she sleeps under a tent, forages for salmonberries, shares a cabin with a group of flea-bitten men, and nearly drowns ... all while completely unchaperoned!"

Fresh from Miss Hepplewhite's Young Ladies' Academy, sixteen-year-old Jane Peck has come to the unknown wilds of the Northwest to wed her true love, William Baldt, her idol from childhood. But her socially correct upbringing in straightlaced Philadelphia is hardly preparation for the colorful characters and crude life that await her in Shoalwater Bay in the Washington Territory. IN a few short months, as she waiting for her absent fianci to return from an errand, Jane will have slept under a tent, befriended a gloriously beautiful Indian man named Handsome Jim, foraged for huckleberries, shared a cabin with a group of ill-assorted, flea-bitten men, and nearly drowned--all while completely unchaperoned! Thrown into the wild with only her wits to keep her safe, Jane learns not only to survive, but to thrive--and to discover for herself whether she is truly proper Miss Jane Peck of Philadelphia, faultless young lady and fianci, or Boston Jane, as the Chinook dub her, fearless and loyal woman of the frontier.
