I see all these posts with tons of responses and I can barely seem to get an answer to questions I have.  Because I'm a newbie can people just not bother to respond to my posts or what?  I am not trying to be rude, I am just merely curious that when I ask a question 100 people look at it but only 1 can answer, yet looking at other threads 30 people answer.  Do people just not bother to help the newbies out?  No rude responses needed, I am just merely curious as to why I can't get responses.

No, some of my questions that have been answered weren't that helpful.  I'm not talking about moving books or ads.  The actual questions that aren't being answered very well.  Just because it's answered doesn't mean it gives a lot of insight or even explains the questions.

I have a few questions like the highlighting your bookshelf, is that just advertising it?  Or is there something else to it?  Can you personalize how your bookshelf is arranged, rather than just by posted date, authors, etc?  I would like to have my series books in order when someone looks at my shelf.  What about the WLed books that have a different ISBN do the people wanting a similar book get a notification that a different one is available?  What is bumping?  I've seen it but can't seem to figure out what it is....

Usually newbies, get tons of answers, maybe your question is one that cannot be anwered in the forums?  Or maybe all of us that love to give our opinion :) were just busy when you posted. I haven't seen a question from you, but hopefully you are now getting the answers you need.

Welcome to the site!

I'm kind of getting the hang of it by trying things myself, as far as the forums, not much help so far.  Some things you can't understand without having the answer told to you, it's just frusterating that's all.  Thanks

I know that when I look at a post, if I don't know the answer, I wait until the smart people show up and give some insight. Maybe you are just stumping us all.

By the way, what ARE your questions?

Hi Rachel,

I'm sorry you are feeling this way about getting help in the forums. I searched the forums for your nickname though, and every question you posted appeared to have been answered. Is there info you are looking for but haven't gotten an answer to?

I think many people look at a thread and if the person's question has been answered satisfactorily then they won't post and repeat the same info again. That is why you get lots of "lookers" but not many "responders." Also, many people really only look at the posts at the top of the list. If yours has moved down to the bottom because lots of other threads have had more recent posts, then you can always add another comment to move the thread to the top again. If you look at many of the threads with 30+ responses then you'll see that lots of the posts are "me too!"-type responses.

In the book bazaar most people won't post to a thread if they aren't interested in the books mentioned in the title.

Hope this info helps you, as I have found the forums to be a great place to get questions answered by lots of helpful people. But if you can't get a question answered in the forum you can also PM your tour guide or use the live help function. Both will get you good answers very quickly (usually less than 5 minutes for the live help!).

If I already see that someone has answered the question correctly I do not feel the need to post.  I dont think it has anything to do with being new or not.  Either people are not understanding your questions or they do not know the answer.

rachel --

as a tour guide, i'm frequently in this forum looking for questions to answer, but i usually end up finding that all of the questions were answered already.  like xengab, i don't feel the need to reply with the same information as others.

i also never even look at the "member since" date, and often even forget it's there at all.  please don't take it personally.  :)

Speaking of Tour Guides, I recommend you contact yours if you aren't getting the answers you are looking for here on the forums. They can be very helpful and you can even go to live help if you are looking for an answer right away.

I want to know what your questions are.  I feel badly that you are feeling that no one will answer your posts.  I know we all try to answer the posts giving our own "insights" to the questions.  I will sometimes refrain from posting to a question or post if others have covered it thinking that it isn't going to help if all I can say is "I don't know" or "I agree".  You've done the right thing to bring our attention to your situation because no one should feel "left out" here.

I looked up your posts and your questions are getting answered, so I don't understand your beef.  If you're upset because you keep advertising books and they're not moving, the answer is there must be a lot in the system before yours.

Hmmm.... That would be why I haven't answered your posts. I don't know the answer to any of those questions.

Yes, unless they have such notifications turned off, they will be notified that a similar book has been posted. Where do you see the term "highlight bookshelf" being used. I guess I don't really know what that means either, but perhaps if I knew the context I would. As far as I know you can not change the way that your bookshelf is displayed, but if someone is looking at it they can change the order. For instance, I can search your bookshelf by keyword, filter it by genre and binding type, and resort it by date, title, and author. So if someone came to your shelf and was looking for a specific series, they could choose to have it sorted by author to put those books together, or they could do a keyword search.

Yes, it is like advertising. You can post in the bazaar or one of the interest groups with the type of books you have on your shelf, inviting people to go look at it. It helps if you have a large group of books with a similar theme (e.g., gardening). Offering deals also helps.

Can you personalize how your bookshelf is arranged, rather than just by posted date, authors, etc? I would like to have my series books in order when someone looks at my shelf.

No, there isn't any way to do this. You can put info in your bookshelf header if you would like to point out that you have an entire series, for example. If you want to do that, go to your bookshelf and click on "Edit My Public Header."

What about the WLed books that have a different ISBN do the people wanting a similar book get a notification that a different one is available?

In the personal settings there is a place to check the types of e-mails the member wants to receive. One of the options is to receive "similar book" notifications for a WL item. If the person has the box unchecked then they will get a notification that the similar title is available. However, many of the people wishing for the book want a particular edition of it (e.g., hardcover). So having a wishlist for a title doesn't necessary mean that someone will want the particular edition you are posting.

If you find that people are not answering the specific question that you want an answer to, then add another post to request more clarification. It is better to ask specific rather than general questions such as "Can you tell me about the bookshelf header?" You can say, "Okay, I understand about X, but can someone give me info regarding Y?" In your posts I don't see any of the specific questions that you listed above.

Rachel, I looked at your forum posts and as far as I can see, the questions you asked were answered. Surely you don't want 30 people to come along behind the one or two responses you got just to say the same thing over and over in a slightly different way!? I thought the answers to your questions were clear and concise. If you aren't happy with the answers you got, check with your tour guide--which actually should be your second source of information...first, there's the Help Docs. Second, tour guide. Third, forums. And definitely check out the red-sticky post at the top this forum that says "Tips for new members." There is a ton of great information there.

The forum posts where there are dozens of responses are often people sharing their own experiences over a certain situation. If I see a question that someone has, newbie or otherwise, and it hasn't been answered, I try to answer. But if there are two or three other answers that would seem to be answering the question, there's no point to me replying also unless I have something different to say. I notice that when people did respond to your questions, you didn't say you didn't understand or ask for more information. That's what you need to do if something isn't clear. There are a ton of helpful people here.

If you are asking about 'bumping' on the forums it is posting a reply to a topic, which 'bumps' that topic back to the top. Personally, I don't get very far down on the topic list before life starts calling me out.LOL By the way, welcome to the club, I'm glad you are here.

Rachel P. (craftmama): >>Can you personalize how your bookshelf is arranged, rather than just by posted date, authors, etc?  I would like to have my series books in order when someone looks at my shelf.<<

Rachel:
Go to My Account / My Bookshelf and click the tab View My Public Bookshelp.
There are several options that could be used to display your bookshelp in different ways.

HI Rachel !  Welcome to PBS !   I'm sorry you havent' been able to get the information you need here in the forums.  If you can't find it here, don't forget to check out the Help Center or PM a Tour Guide (TG).  We can help point you in the right direction.

Annisa did a great job of answering your questions.  Let's see if I have anything to add.

I have a few questions like the highlighting your bookshelf, is that just advertising it?  Or is there something else to it?

Highlighting your shelf is a great way to get others to see what you have to offer.  In additon to highlighting it in the book bazaar, other PBS'ers can check out your shelf from any of your posts here in the forum.  Having a bookshelf header is a great way to offer deals or let others know about you.

Can you personalize how your bookshelf is arranged, rather than just by posted date, authors, etc? I would like to have my series books in order when someone looks at my shelf.

Unfortunately, you can not but don't despare because many people looking for a particular author will search by author and all the series books will come up.  Or if they are looking for say "harliquin"(I know I can't spell), they will search for that.

What about the WLed books that have a different ISBN do the people wanting a similar book get a notification that a different one is available?

In addition to the similiar book notifications, there is always a thread in the book bazaar where you can list your WL books with other ISBN #'s.  Many people check this thread for books.

I hope this information helps and don't despair just jump right in and keep asking.  That's what it's all about. Having fun, meeting people and reading !!! :)

.

Maybe people just don't know the answers. I could only answer two of those questions you just cited (and I think others already have but I haven't read all the responses). Also, if the first person to answer seems to have covered a question well, I don't reply unless I have something else to add to the discussion. No point in being redudant. ;)

Where are you asking these questions?  I only see one thread started by you on this page.

OK I saw your other question. It was answered and there is no other questions on it but the one about highlighting your shelf.  Maybe advertising would be a better term.  Some of the genre boards have ongoing threads where people advertise what books they have in that genre or if they are running deal.  But if you want to make your own post you need to do that in the book bazaar.

I still don't see why you are so upset. The only question I see that you asked was answered.

I suggest reading the Help Center and the red thread of the top of this forum called Tips for new members.  It's there for your benefit and is loaded with information.  Then the forum is available for anything that wasn't answered.
