I'm a Lansdale fan to begin with, but The Bottoms is widely regarded as one of his better works, and it won a few awards here or there (I want to say an Edgar, but I can't be sure right now). It's a "coming-of-age" novel set in 1930s Texas Badlands, and was quite good, IMO. His "Hap & Leonard" series is quite popular (and good) as well, but they should be read in order. If you haven't read Lansdale before, I suggest that you head over to joerlansdale.com. He has a free short story posted every week (he has written for years, so this is some of his backlog), and they might help get an idea of his style. The story might be 3 paragraphs long, or 30 pages, and he tends to mix genres up a bit, so if one story doesn't strike you, check back in a week, and that one might.
