I have a question about a lost box of books.

I recieved a request for a box of books (6 books) I wasn't real excited about any of their books, but thought I could find 6 that I would enjoy enough to go ahead with the swap.

I mailed my 6 books to them and recieved my books in a timely manner.  They never did mark recieved ... so I PM'd her and asked if she had recieved them.  She said no but she wasn't concerned yet.

Today (approx a month after original swap) She pm'd me asking what we should do about the unreceived books. I also got a letter in the mail today from the USPS stating that the books were lost and all they had was the mailing label (which they sent back to me) they suggested I fill out the recovery form so they could search for the items lost.

I pm'd her explaining what the USPS said and offered her 4 choices

1. Wait for the PO to find the books (but I told her I figure they are as good as gone)

2. I could mail back her books

3.  She could select more books of my shelf and we could try again

4.  I would "gift" her credits

My question is ...  Am I taking appropriate action?  Am I being too generous?  WHat should I have done?  I really hate to give up my hard earned credits, but will if that is what she requests (although I don't even have 6 credits right now)   How would you have handled this?

Thanks for your response.

JL

I'm a new member so someone else may have better advice for you, but I'll give it a shot...

I thought the Box of Books program didn't use credits - that you just traded books for books. I don't see the "Boxer" emblem next to your name. Was this an actual Box of Books transaction?

If this was just an order for books from your bookshelf in the normal way, they should get their credits back automatically when the books go lost in the system. You don't have to do any more than that, everything else you're offering is just being generous.

If you used PBS-DC, you will still have your credits. Otherwise, if I understand correctly, you won't receive credits for these books. If the books show up later (which doesn't sound likely in your case) they can mark them received in their transaction archive and then you will receive your credits.

I'm not a boxer, but agree with Stephanie.  Boxing transactions are designed to be sans credit, therefore I wouldn't have offered her option #4.

The Help Center covers this:

  • If a Box-O-Books is lost in the mail, the Boxer who sent the lost books can compensate the other Boxer by (1) offering replacement books (2) offering credits for the unreceived books or (3) a combination of (1) and (2).
    • When the swap has been settled however the two Boxers agree the Box can be marked received.
  • If both Boxers agree that no compensation for the unreceived box is necessary, the box can be marked received OR we can be contacted to move the swap to completed status
    • The Boxer who did not receive needs to be the one to ask for us to move the swap to completed, to confirm that he or she consents to this without compensation
  • If the Boxer who did not receive wants compensation and the Boxer who sent the "lost" books does not give it, the Boxer who did not receive should contact us.
    • In this case, we wil move the swap to completed and the Boxer who did not receive can leave Boxer feedback about the swap.
    • The Boxer who is refusing to settle the swap will not be allowed to leave feedback at that point - if no feedback has been supplied then positive feedback will be supplied from that side of the swap if we move it to completed status without compensation to the Boxer who wants compensation.

Strange question:  Where's the OP's BOB badge?

And there ya go.  I stand corrected, thank you Cathy!

Does Boxing recommend or require DC?

BOB symbol by a member's name disappears if the BOB account is put on hold. Just tested and verified with my own account.

I would have done just what you did sans option #1 since I'd assume the books were long gone.

Credits are often used to settle a BoB transaction gone wrong because the requester that didn't get their books should be able to get something they can use and if the sender's shelf just doesn't have anything they want (or anything at all!) then credits are the easiest way to close the transaction.

Denise - DC is not required in BoB.

Well, I stand corrected. You learn something new every day! I have a question for our Boxer members.

When people refund credits for a Box of Books transaction, do they usually refund one credit for every book in the box?

Thanks for all the responses!  My bob is on pause...so, yes, that is why the symbol isnt under my name.  I haven't heard back from the person who I was trading with yet on my offer to compensate, but I am glad to know I am on the right track.

I was wondering the same thing as the last poster...if a credit per book would be required...I do now have 6 credits but would hate to give them all away (since the books I got from the trade I would never have ordered on a "per credit" basis.  I will however send all 6 to settle this "box gone wrong"
