Second in a series this is a terrific read. New and old together with aliens and some (but not too much) hard sci. Really good.

My opinion of this book changed as I read it. It deals rather intimately with the nature of faith and its capacity to be used both free us and to enslave us. At times I feared it would slip into the self-indulgent hedonism of Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, though fortunately that didn't happen.
