I sometimes see lists on profiles for "buddy swaps" on here.

How do they work?  How do you get to join in?  I don't do the games on the games forum.  I have always been scared I would do them wrong so I've never joined in.  Are the buddy swaps included in the games somehow?  Is it kind of like having a pen pal & you swap things or just send people random things they like?

There are games that are book swaps, with stealing and reveals.  There are boxes, with everyone putting in a book and a line to take one out.  There are swaps for non books, such as the tea swap.  Then there are games where you have a partner.

The swap will have a set if rules at the beginning.  Daisy means that you go in order if picking, sort of like gym class.  Elephant means there is a set list that is gone down until everyone has a turn.  Limbo is sort of in between, with everyone showing their books at the beginning, plus a line.

Basically, find a topic you are interested in.  Find an experienced host.  Ask if they will help you in your first game, then join.  I started in a game with Ellen.  I also recommend Alice as a host for a first game.  Having an experienced host who has the time to help and nudge you is very important.  Most games are very welcoming of new members.

I would not recommend a very confusing two or more part game for your first one.  Some are set up to be multiple sessions, with twists.  Those would be confusing for a first time.

New games are listed in the red thread at the top of the games forum.

Thank you for the info, Emily!!  Maybe this summer when my life is a bit calmed down a bit, I will join in!!  I have considered it at times but always feel overwhelmed with the rules.  It does sound like fun though!

Couple of times a year there will be a game set up just for beginners.  Those usually have some long time players in to help coach.

After your turn you are expected to send a message to the next player.  It must have been my third game before I actually remembered to do that.  Folks were very helpful at nudging me along.

There are sometimes Buddy Swaps that don't involve tea or books.  The rules will be outlined to read before sign up and will involve sending gifts of some kind as specified in the rules.

I participated in Ani's Tea Swap for several years.  It was so much fun.  People were very helpful and friendly, and I got to try out a number of teas I'd never heard of before.  And Ani is very organized, funny, and helpful.

Okay.  I'll be honest.  I have not been in the non book games.  Once a cookbook and extras game.  But I'm in the book games.  The games forum is where I can get new releases and hard to find books.  Plus the erotica that never moves.  We can watch our very own groundhog high priestess.

There are buddy swaps with partners.  And there are buddy swaps of gifts.

There are a bunch of groups within the games.  The Divas, the Sistas, and the DOS.  I have found the game folks to be very friendly and supportive.

Please do try out the Games forum.  All you need to do is find something of interest and join in.  Don't worry about doing things wrong.  We all do it wrong sometimes but everyone's so helpful and friendly.  Just let the hostess and other players know you're new to games.  They'll be happy to answer your questions and nudge you along if you get stuck on what to do.

Amber practically everyone joins their first game saying something like this.

"I've been wanting to try out the games for a while, but was too intimidated. I'm still not clear on how they work but have finally decided to get my feet wet."

You'll immediately get about 5 replies saying "Welcome aboard. It's not as difficult as it looks. If you have questions ask. Anyone will be happy to help."

And it's true. I made my share of newby mistrakes. Everyone was cool. Just jump in, you'll have fun.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's been intimidated to join in, but I will have to look around the forum a bit & find a game that looks intriguing!

I was scared spitless my first game.  Thought for sure I'd mess it up.

I've now been playing the games forum for at least 6 of my 7 years here.  Guess what?  I still sometimes screw it up and do something wrong!  We all do but someone's always there to help out.  And no one laughs at you or calls you names or is mean at all because I think everyone that plays in the games fourm has messed it up once or twice so we know it happens.  And we play on because it is so addicting over there!

Amber, I agree with everyone else.  We love new players in the Games.  It can be intimidating at first, but most of us remember when we were newbies and none of us mind taking the time to explain the process or give details.  The hostesses and moderators welcome any and all questions and most of the players will be more than happy to help new players.

As another swap addict, I agree with all of the previous comments; it was scary to join the first game, but the rules aren't as complicated as they seem and everyone is very helpful to a newbie.

Having fun, getting better acquainted with fellow players, and winning wish list books (that are in excellent condition) are some of the great aspects of participating in PBS swaps.  I get so much more enjoyment from this site because of the games.  If I only swapped books and commented on a CMT thread from time to time, I would have left here years ago.
