In his 17 years as pastor there, Green Acres' Sunday school attendance grew from 700 to more than 2,500.
Green Acres sponsored eight missions under his leadership which had a combined attendance of 600 people per Sunday. With a population of 75,000 Tyler counted one person in 10 as a member of Green Acres. In each of those 17 years, Green Acres was consistently among the top churches relative to the number of baptisms, Sunday school growth, and Cooperative Program giving in the Southern Baptist Convention.
Under Dr. Powell's leadership, the church also operated an outreach center that provided one hot meal per day, clothing and medical/dental assistance to the poor of Tyler. In his final year there, the church served 24,000 meals, provided clothing to 18,000 people and dispensed medical and dental services to 1,800 people-at no cost. The church also built a church in a foreign country each year during the last 12 years.
Dr. Powell is committed to missions, evangelism, and the local church. And, he is the pastor's friend. He joined the Annuity Board in 1989, only after being convinced of the Lord's leadership and determining that it was a place where he could help pastors and churches fulfill their calling by properly caring for their retirement and insurance needs.
Dr. Powell has preached in most America's great churches and served as interim pastor at the Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.« less
