Hi..I'm sorta new here. (Joined over a year ago). I've noticed that several people "bump" their threads more than once per day, some have done it several times in one day.

Another site I belong to, doesn't allow bumping within 24 hours. What are the rules here at PBS about bumping threads in the Book Bazaar? Is there a way to report a post in which they violate the rules? At the other site I belong to, there are moderators and they keep things very organized and have set rules.

Not trying to hurt anyones feelings, I just don't think its fair to those who follow rules.

They aren't suppose to bump them but once a day.   But no one normally says anything about it unless it's over abused.

In the Book Bazaar forum, there are currently two sticky threads (in red, at the top).  The second one, on "how to use this forum" includes the rules on bumping.

Hmm. I've seen one in particular who bumped their thread 3 times (at least) today alone.

Just doesn't seem fair to me.

OMG, I just went back to check and I am one of them! I did it yesterday. Did not know that adding new information was considered a "bump". According to the instructions, I was supposed to edit my original post.  For some reason, I thought they were just talking about when you write 'bump' in order to push it back up. Live and learn! I solemnly swear that I will never do it again, though!

I wonder if it would be worth it to separate the "looking for" postings from the book bazaar by giving them a separate forum? Keep the BB for sellers, and have a new one for members who are searching for certain books, genres, deals, etc.

They do that so everyone can have a chance to have their posts seen.  I have seen people post a complain when someone has bumped more than once.  You could gently remind the person.

What is "bumping"?

Bumping is replying to your own thread to get it back to the top of the forum.

I got a gentle reminder, and I promise not to bump more than once a day :)

I'm not very gentle. I tried to give a gal a gentle reminder the other day, and she didn't bother to read it so then I kinda smacked her. I've never been a very gentle person, I guess. I should copy the email that was sent to Coco, the sender was much nicer than me :)   Bernie usually sends notices, but she is not available on the weekends, and someone was getting a little carried away the other day, so I posted a notice of the rules, and then when that didn't help, I commented again. Unfortunately, as I say, I was not as sweet as the PM that Coco got. I liked that one much more than my comments :)

Heather is probably referring to me. Like Dartha I didn't realize that posting anything but "bump" was a bump. I thanked the requestors who requested books from me in my post and didn't realize that was considered a bump. Guess I won't be doing that anymore! Sorry about that and thanks for letting me know Heather!

I offered, within a post, to help explain the rules to a gal yesterday, and she took me up on it and PM'd me.  She really did not have an understanding of the rules.  Of course they are right there to read, but not everyone does.  So we've been PMing and she's getting it now.  I hope.  She felt really bad and simply didn't know how to streamline her intent to advertise her shelf.  I think we've got it worked out now.  I'll keep helping her if I haven't managed to make it clear.  Here's hoping............:>)

Dartha;  you said

"I wonder if it would be worth it to separate the "looking for" postings from the book bazaar by giving them a separate forum?"

The Book Bazaar has a monthly thread "December..What Books are you Looking For".   It gets really good results.   Check it out!   www.paperbackswap.com/forum/view_topic.php

Yep, I pmed a few people about it. It was late at night, so I'm afraid I might've come off a little rude, but I didn't mean to. I was only frustrated, thats all. I apologize to anyone who felt I was being rude. :(

We all start somewhere...and don't know all the rules. I'm still learning too. The only reason I took it upon myself to pm a few people, was that this site doesn't seem to be moderated like another site I belong to is. On the other site, they are strict with their rules (to make it fair to everyone) and when you see someone violating the rules you can report the post, and that gets sent to the moderators who take action, probably even pm'ing the person to make sure the know what the rules are, etc.

Again, sorry if I stepped on any toes. Happy reading!

I am pretty new.  I have, in the past, posted an update or two on threads (questions) that I started.   I had no idea that this was a bump!!   I kept wondering why, in the middle of threads, there were posts with just that word in it!

it is different if you are posting additional information or clarifying something or letting people know you got their orders and have pulled other books off of your shelf.  I appreciate those sort of messages so if I'm looking at the shelf I know it is current and do not consider those a bump just to get it up near the top of the list

I dont think thank yous are considered bumps espespecially when the person already posted and your post is close to the top anyway. I generally say thanks if Im around to get the order and if they are orders I got while asleep I thank everyone who ordered since the last time I was in to bump my post up.

I'm glad this is being addressed a little more lately. The BB was getting pretty bad. I wouldn't even look at the shelves of people that were posting multiple threads and repeatedly bumping it annoyed me so much. Wasn't exactly the outcome they were looking for I bet.

Are the rules re bumping pretty much just for posting done in the Book Bazaar?  It seems that in other forums such as CMT and Questions the original poster's participation in the ongoing dialog, even if it's bumping the thread, would be appropriate.

No, Kristen, most people don't post in their CMT or Q topics multiple times, just for the sole purpose of

Bringing

Up

My

Post

for the sake of bringing it up to the top, multiple times in one day anywhere but in the BB (well and some do it in the games annoyingly too). Conversations bring them back up and that is considered normal in the other forums, and some "need to be noticed" topics do get bumped, but rarely more than once per day.

You're welcome, Kristen! I didn't make it up, trust me! I just saw that no one had actually posted what it's generally meant to mean, and unless you've been told here or on another board somewhere, you would have no idea that it is actually an acronym.
