Yes, it finally happened!

I recently sent out well over 75 books, and was lucky enough to send all of the right books to the right recipients (yes, I am quite proud of this, LOL!).  All transactions were marked successfully completed, including the ones with RCs.  Most of the RCs were for smoke, but some were for books in like new condition.  Then I get a PM regarding one of the "successful" transactions, and the recipient states that the book was so moldy they threw it away.  Huh???  It was like new, read once, and passed on, as were the vast majority of the 75+ books I had just sent out.

I went back to the transaction archive, and sure enough, it was marked received OK, but the person still wanted their credit back.

Now, the person also happened to have a laundry list of RCs.  All of the time we read on the boards about members avoiding laundry lists of RCs--and I have done so myself.  But since my book was like new, I sent it.  Now, in truth, the laundry list of RCs did not cover the problem the receiver alleges, but I am left to wonder again about people with a laundry list of RCs being too picky.  I mean, I have asthma--there is no way I'd keep a moldy book in the house!  And the book was like new!!

I returned the credit anyway, as I didn't really want the hassle.  But in some ways I am regretting it, as I KNOW the book was fine.  It's not about the credit itself, just the fact that I really think the person is wrong.

It did take 3 weeks for the book to make it one state over, a media mail trip that is usually pretty quick.  The only think I'm wondering is if something happened in transit.

Anyway, thanks for listening  and letting me vent.  Add me to the list of people who will turn down the long lists of RCs now.  I just knew it would happen eventually!

If I knew the book was fine when I sent it I wouldn't have returned the credit because they did mark it received as ok and it makes you wonder....

She said she meant to mark it RWAP but messed up.  In retrospect I probably shouldn't have returned it...with all those successful transactions it wouldn't have mattered in the slightest as far as my record goes.  I guess it was my way of making sure I wouldn't be bothered by that person again.  I always only had just a few credits, if any, and had it still been that way then I might not have refunded it, but since I just completed the other transactions and had a bunch more credits, I wasn't as "careful" with them as I might have been previously.

And people wonder why so many people are wary of accepting RCS of any kind. I don't auto-decline RCS but when I see a long one come up-I decline. I might miss something and a long RC just screams "really picky person" to me.

This is exactly how I'll be from now on.  IMHO, the receiver in my case just proved that point.

I'm new. How do you know if they have a lot of RC's?

When you see the book request you WILL see any RCs someone has.   You have to state your book meets the conditions before you can agree to mail it--if you don't see any, there aren't any.  Don't worry about missing them--you won't. :)

I accept every rc that comes up and fits the books condition but I also almost always make a picture of the book I sent. Fool me once....

There is no way on God's Green earth I would have returned a credit for a book that was in all but new condition.  You KNOW what condition the book was in when it left your possession.....I thinks she is trying to pull something?!

I haven't accepted any RC's since my last fiasco..but I randomly take pics. of books I am sending..especially if it's an older one.  I will definitely take pics. of ALL books I may accept w/ RCs attached.

She may have received the book from someone else.  It may not have been the book you sent.  A request may have timed out and then was sent to you, but the first person sent the book anyway.  It happens.

I would never have returned a credit for a book I knew met conditions either, especially since she didn't even mark it as RWAP. It's very possible that she simply confused your book with another one she received. I like the idea of taking pictures of books with RC's but I'm not sure I'd go that far myself. I'd be more inclined to just decline those with a laundry list of requests.

I'm sending one out today that had a rather long list of RCs and the only reason I decided to accept it is that the book in question is a BRAND NEW book...that is, I haven't even opened it to read it myself. I ordered it new and it's been on my TBR for several months, but I decided to download the audio version of it instead to listen to it when I stumbled across it on my library website. So I would just love it for some scammer to tell me this book was stinky (we're in a non-smoking, non-pet home) or moldy or had writing in it or whatever. Sorry, you'd have to take your scam elsewhere, dear.
