A really nicely written book about 3 women who meet as children and remain friends even though one "turns out" and then goes to Hollywood and becomes a famous star, while the other 2 marry their childhood sweethearts and stay in their small town. They are always there for each other. A story of growing up, war, love, and most of all enduring friendship: Whippy Bird, Effa Commander and MayAnna Kovaks (aka Marion Street) - BFF, in today's lingo.

Follow the lives of May Anna, Buster, Toney, Whippy Bird, Effa Commander and others as they go through life. This is Effa Commander's story in order to set the story straight about May Anna and Buster. This novel contains the deep bonds of friendship, fame, death, heart ache and strenght. It is set in Butte, Montant during the Prohibition-era. Great read.

I am a fan of Sandra Dallas books, but this one for came up really short. I found it tedious and not very interesting. Written so different than her other books. Hard to believe Sandra Dallas wrote it. S.L.

I just loved this book about three lifetime girlfriends. A fun, lively story I would recommend to anyone. The book just proves that husbands and boyfriends come and go, but a girlfriend is forever! An easy, fun read. I just ordered another of Sandra Dallas' books. Hope it is as good as this one! Genny

A small town girl is discovered and moves to Hollywood to be a star. This story tells of a circle of friends from rural America to the 1940s.

Sandra Dallas' characters are always so colorful. I've never heard another author name her characters anything like Whippy Bird and Effa Commander. The story line about 3 friends who grow up in Butte, Montana and their adventures before WWII and afterwards is an entertaining one - it made me stay up too late every night to read the next chapter!

Mystery, humor & a peek at WWII America. Dallas does it again. This is really a story of 2 friends and the small town folks they grew up with. The only thing missing from this book were the quilts.

May Anna Kovacks was discovered on the dusty streets of Butte, Montana and went on to become a Hollywood star. War, fame, marriage, love and heartbreak came and went. What never changed was the bond she shared with her two best friends, Effa Commander and Whippy Bird. When scandal, murder and betrayal made a legend of May Anna, only Effa and Whippy could set the record straight.

From the back of the book: In a rich, wonderful novel that reaches from a forgotten rural America to a dazzling Hollywood of the 1940's and 50's, Sandra Dallas spins a moving tale of a circle of friends, a shared past, and an act of violence that shattered innocence forever.

When I first started reading this book, I didnt think it would be as good as it turned out to be. I thought it was just going to be a run of the mill story. But I was fooled. The friendships that are formed in this story are what the story was about, and I became totally immersed in the lives of the characters and the development of their relationships.
