This is a great suspenseful story but it still held the love of a man for his estanged wife and his two daughters. I love books about Texas Rangers. They seem bigger-than-life to me. Huge, broad-shouldered, incredibly handsome......you get the picture. I enjoyed how the author pulled the history that she had introduced into the ever-thickening plot. It all came together very nicely at the end. This is my first book by this author and I would highly recommend her.

It could be the lack of a caffeinated beverage in my system, but I found the plot of this book to be very flimsy, and definitely vague. It reads more like an outline for a book, more than the finished product itself. The "relationship" between the husband & wife was the most disappointing & difficult to believe. Certainly not one of Carla Negger's better books.

I thought the overall story and concept of this book could have been a good story. also i chose it because it was partly based on an area of the country where I am from. however as a mystery it lacked any action until the very end. The banter between the two lead characters went on and on. I never give up on a book but I couldn't wait for this ending as it took 2/3 of the book to get a start. Perhaps if I cared more for romances that the heroine needed wooing I would have liked it but if you are a more 'hard core" mystery fan ex. Greg Iles, ect. I would not give this a good rating.

From "Publisher's Weekly" 12/3/2001
Although Texas real estate developer Beau McGarrity is suspected of shooting his wife, he isn't charged because policewoman Alice Parker has compromised the investigation by tampering with the evidence. Nevertheless, he stalks and threatens financial planner Susanna Galway, wife of the Texas Ranger who turned Alice in. Stuck in a marital stalemate, Susanna doesn't tell her headstrong husband, Jack, that Beau has visited her. She also neglects to mention that she has recently made a fortune in the stock market. Instead, she flees north to her feisty grandmother's, then heads with her grandmother and twin daughters for a secluded Adirondack cabin. When both Beau and Alice pursue her there, the women are pulled even deeper into a web of violence and intrigue. Inevitably, Jack and a fellow Ranger arrive on the scene to save the day. The plot is confusing at times, and Susanna's financial secrecy will make it difficult for readers to sympathize with her. Indeed, what kind of middle-class woman could make $10 million in this market, much less fail to mention it to hubby? Still, Neggers's (The Carriage House) characteristically brisk pacing and colorful characterizations sweep the reader toward a dramatic and ultimately satisfying denouement.

Had potenitally good plot, but got bogged down in places and a little light in reality.

Texas Ranger Jack Galaway and his wife Susanna have hit a rough patch in their marriage, and a prolonged seperation hasn't helped matters. Jack is ready to get his family back. Then the Galaway's past catches up with them as they become entwined with an ex-convict, a murderer and a surprising connection to the very distant past.

A very good mix of romance and murder!!!!!!!!!! Vengence, money and murder are menacing companions when they meet in the quiet stillness of an Adirondack winter

THE CABIN is one of the most absorbing books I've read in a while. Susanna Galway is a complex character who suddenly has to deal with her own fears about how she's changed and what impact that'll have on her marriage -- all against a backdrop of murder and suspense. And she's such a strong character...I felt like I could both admire her and put myself in her shoes. I loved Jack Galway and how he figures out what's been going on with his wife. This is one of Carla's best.
