Has anyone read Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks? What did you think of it? I'm working on the audiobook version of it and it's annoying the junk out of me. The narrator is talking like a robot and I can't get into the book very easily. Is this story worth continuing? If so, I'll try and pick it up in paperback. If it's not that great of a book though, I might quit it.

Thanks!!

Kelly, R.E.K. says it was one of her favorite books in 2011.  I have it on my list.

Yup, Kelly, I liked Caleb's Crossing and the author is one of my favorites.  Sorry the audio is not working out.  You could check out the book and see how that goes.

Great, thank you! I absolutely adored the other two books by her that I've read, so I was pretty excited about this one. The narrator is talking as if she speaks broken English, except the book isn't written in broken English...so it's awkward and sounds robotic. I'll try and get my hands on a paperback or ebook instead.

Kelly,  I went over to Audiable to listen for myself, and then I listened to her on Clockwork Angel just for comparison.  It does sound like she is trying to affect an "native american accent" because in Clockwork Angel it isn't like that.  That would bug me as well.

I listened to a book and the narrator who was American did it in a English accent and it was just wrong, off.  She just couldn't hold the accent for the whole book it was distracting as hell.

The narrator absolutely makes or breaks it for audio books.

The narrator absolutely makes or breaks it for audio books.  I so agree!
