This is just a guess, but it may be that the PDF file is too big for what's trying to load and read it.?

You say you can read it on your computer. But is the SD card in your computer when you're trying to open/read the file, or on another device?

And if it's another device, what's the program you're using that's trying to open and read the file?

Something is up with the Adobe form the PDF is in, and it could be specific to the Sylvania edition of Adobe or a problem with the file conversion itself.

I'd check the settings on Calibre and see what your options are and play with converting it different ways.

But PDF's are one of the worst formats to work with. Will the Adobe work with anything else? Any other formats you can conver to and have them load?

I dont think Adobe does anything but PDF.  IF you know a program I can try I willing.  I thought I could get them to play as MOBI thru Kindle for Android...but that dont work either or I too Dumb to figure it out.  LOL   I Can get them on the KindleWiFi3 no problem.  I dont want to be carring both a tablet & Kindle around.   I have a friend that wants a kindle thought I give her mine IF I could get this to work.

I dont think Adobe does anything but PDF.  IF you know a program I can try I willing.

Cnet hosts a lot of programs, you can go Here and type in "Convert to PDF" on search, then click on specific settings on the side to narrow the search. (For example, click on your Computer OS and "Free" to find those programs that will run on your system and are free.)

Then you can read the reviews and make sure that the program will do what you want it to.

I will only convert from PDF, not too it, so don't have any experience with all the settings.

I thought I could get them to play as MOBI thru Kindle for Android...but that dont work either or I too Dumb to figure it out.

I know the Kindle hardware I had would load and read sideloaded Mobi files, but didn't think you could sideload content on any of the apps.

or try a different reader? There's another one for Android Here. But I don't have experience with it myself.

As always, loading any third-party program can cause it's own problems.

Just a thought, have you tried asking your questions in the MobileRead Forums  (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/index.php) ?  Under E-Book Software there is a whole section for Calibre questions and under E-Book Formats there is a section for the Mobi format.    I've found a lot of information I needed just by "lurking" but the members of the various forums like nothing better than to try and help a fellow reader.  Also the creator of calibre monitors the forums and sometimes directs questioners to answers for their problems.

Well, you should be able to sideload mobi files fairly easily, I'd assume.

I don't have an android phone myself, but with my blackberry, I just plug my phone in, go into the Kindle folder, go into the e-books folder, and put .mobi files there. That's approximately the same method for sideloading books onto the Kindle itself (on the Kindle, the folder is named "documents", not "ebooks"), so I'd assume it's about the same for Android.

But failing that, why go with .mobi to PDF?  Why not go with a 3rd party .mobi reader or even a .epub reader?  Mobi and Epub files are basically just fancy HTML files, so you're going to get a lot better conversion between them than you will with PDF, where you might loose some formating.

Barbara--good to know. I love my 2 Kindle keyboards. I am slowly trying to remove my "dirty" books from one and putting kids books on it.  Its hard because I am attached to both Kindles, even though I rarely if ever use the first one. (can only read one at a time, right? hehe). I think I have most of the dirty ones off there now....though some paranormal romances can be dirty. Not that the kids have used it much, and it would be hard to miss the KIDS folder which I keep at the top.

I saw the Fire behind glass at Walmart....one of these days I'll play with one. I'm sure they are fun. I don't want the distractions of games and web surfing when I am supposed to be reading.

Sounds like a good deal on the printer. I have a HP laser printer that is awesome.

Speaking of TV's, the one I mentioned in that other thread came yesterday. Not sure if he is keeping it....there have been some issues! But with Amazon's 30 day no hassle return guarantee, he will keep it a while and see if he can get it to work the way he wants it to.

Anne Sorry to hear about the TV issues!  IF it broke contact them ASAP [before they run out]  They will send you a Replacement & a FREE shipping label to send the present TV Back!   OR is it You just dont like it?   WHY?

Easy way to Delete you eBooks from Kindle is to UnReg it!   in You Amazon account page under Devices you own....then Reg & load only what you want on it!   When my son broke my kindle back in Sept when I got the new one I had to go thru & reload ALL my ebooks on it One at a Time UGH!  I had 300 in Kindle & 320 in my Calibre Accounts LOL  I still trying to get them all straigten out GRRRR  & Being with out Reading for a Week made me Grumpy hehehehe  why I was trying the Tablet.   It an ADDICTION!!

O unless the Kids hook it up to their computers & access Your account or turn WiFi on they cant get them from the Arcives!

I wasnt thrilled with the FIRE!  There are LOTS of things It Wont do!  & Many Problems getting it to do what adv to do ....  Amazon Forums & MobileRead tons of complaints or I should say questions ....  Even the Techy are being challenged to get it to work LOL  Makes me not feel so dumb!

I know its possible to delete that way. My issue is an emotional attachment to the Kindle even though I don't use it much, I use the other one. But all the time I spent putting books on there and arranging them, now to take them off! Its a mental problem hehe

I guess the TV is ok. He really needs to get an HD box for it though, to take advantage of the capabilities. He was having issues with things like the menu box not disappearing, etc. Could have been a user error.

I think for the purposes of tablets (as oposed to ereaders) there are better ones....unless a user wants the Amazon cloud interface.

My menu is on my remote on the 7"  click once it shows click again its gone!  I end up clicking several times LOL   It gets confused as me hehehe  Tell him Dont hold it!  & It wont go off til you click it off.

I think Cloud is a rip off!  5 gig doesnt hold much then they charge you for more!  Like buying a storage shed & filling it with unless items!  Or Renting storage space!  I just dont understand WHY Amazon took away the option to store things on SD Cards!

think of the amazon Cloud as free storage for things you've purchased from them.  you only have to pay if you're uploading other content to amazon - and given that then you're giving them access to *your* stuff instead of the other way around, i'd never do that.  but i love being able to re-download music i've purchased from them in the event something breaks here - i don't necessarily have to back it up myself.

if you do want to upload your own content to the amazon cloud, why?  what benefit do you get from it that i'm not seeing?

For a lot of people the idea of cloud storage (from whatever source) is appealing because then they don't have to buy a device with a lot of built in storage, thinking they can get to all their stuff on-line when ever they want it. It's the 'new' thing, and there are various places you can get it. I think "Drop Box" is one of the more popular places.

And the hardware coming out can be a lot cheaper if they dumb down the storage area and don't have to put in a card slot to expand the memory. So if you can get a much cheaper device with bare minimum memory and store your stuff on line and download with 3G, a lot of people seem to be happy with it.

For me, it's not something I'm interested in. Except for the free storage our Internet provider offers, (which I only use to store family photos in case of a fire, but also have them on DVD and hard drives in a media safe) I've been online to know that you never fully trust one place as your backups. They don't hurt, but always have a second or third way to back up your stuff. Anyone can have a hard drive crash, no matter what they tell you.

Web sites disapear. Remember Geocities? They gave some notice then disapeared, and for those people who didn't get the news in time, all their stuff that they didn't back up was lost. I'm pretty sure Fictionwise will go the same route one of these days. I've been collecting on-line fanfic since 1995, and have thousands of stories. Friends used to make fun of me because I didn't trust the on-line archives to exist forever. Some of them crashed over time, a few were just shut down because of webhost's losing interests. I've seen quite a few author's on forums frantically asking if anyone had a copy of their story because they didn't keep one. A ton of the stories I have now aren't on-line any more.

Another thing that worries me about Cloud storage is access. Yeah, they may have your stuff, but can you get through the traffic to get it? I know with my iPhone browsing is slow and iffy in spots even with 3G. It'd take forever to re-download some of my stuff while I'm out and about. And as more and more people do regular backups to on-line storeage sites, it takes up bandwidth. Providers complain now that Netflix takes up to 20% bandwidth at times, but people uploading and downloading massive amounts over the internet will slow things down even more. So even if you have it on-line, can you get to it when you want it?

But I do see more and more people storing stuff on the cloud for every day usage and backups, especially since there's going to be a hard drive supply problem soon. (Taiwan had a major flood, and they make most of the hard drives, but now may be out of business for a while. Stores now are asking people not to buy more than two hard drives at a time because of predicted shortages.)

I'm just one of those people happier to have my stuff all with me, even if I have to pay a bit more to have the memory or the SD card in the machine. I'm not very trusting of the online world. smiley

I think the question Anne is trying to ask Barbara is why don't you stick with one of the two major brands- Nook and Kindle- instead of getting frustrated with these off-brands that aren't measuring up to what you want them to do, why not just go with one or the other, especially with the prices now down under $100? I shop in Big Lots quite frequently myself, but the thing to remember about Big Lots and stores of that style is that the majority of the merchandise is off-brand. Sometimes that doesn't matter, but I think in the case of electronics, it does.

I know you dislike Barnes and Noble becaue of the credit card thing, but let me suggest that the credit card on file can be a Visa gift card with a penny left on it and you can use a B&N gift card that will precede the credit card (it will take balance off your GC before it goes to the CC). Apple does the same thing, BTW. That's how I keep my spending under control. I use a B&N gift card and reload the balance as needed. When I see a B&N charge on my CC, I know I got a bit carried away and I back off the next reload a bit.

I think the Amazon Cloud is great for my purposes. Now when I upload a personal document it is stored in the cloud. I go to it every day and delete my daily newsfeed (which I use Calibre to download and send to my Kindle) and also when I finish with a personal document I go and delete it from the Cloud also. I don't have any need to upload music etc to it.

My desktop PC is 7 years old or older. I do backup to an external drive but not daily or weekly. Because of the age of the PC I did join Carbonite online backup. I like it. If I am on one of my other computers and want to know if I have something, I can go to carbonite and find it quickly. I think its worth the $60 a year to not lose whatever I didn't get backed up before this computer dies (holding my breath hoping it never does!)

As for tablets, (not including the ipad, everyone knows that is the best) look at the Lenovo...it was discounted to $199 at Walmart last week, when I was there, and the reviews for it are excellent. If I was going to get a tablet (which I am not) that one is the one I would be looking at.

Actually Anne iPads wont do 1/2 I want either LOL  My son friends have them...    So I asked them tons of questions about them ....  I think I know More about them for someone who doent want one than anybody LOL

Yes I saw them on sale .... missed it tho LOL   Right now I cant afford to try again!  After yrs of different people telling me what tablets can do I finding a Lot of whats been said is Bull !     I beginning to feel like my son....he Built his 1st computer at a cost of $2000 cause the computer that were being sold Didnt do 1/2 what he wanted!  IF I was Techy I would really consider building my own Tablet ----     Most of what they told me is Not Right out of the box its Rooted or Hacked!  Which is Illegal in terms of Warrenty!  Now IF some one gave me an old tablet OR I could buy one cheap I get it Rooted to do what I want..

Barbara, what is it that you want to do with it?

If you have a list of what applications your looking for, it might help if someone who has something that fits can speak up. Can't hurt to try.

3 Put Calibre on it  Direct

Why would you want to put Calibre on a tablet directly? It's an ebook management system, and while you can apparently put it on a flash drive and store books that way, I think that it would be too bulky and too much a memory hog to manage large libraries on a tablet. I have mine on my hard drive and just sent to my table or my eReaders, and it's gotten a bit slow for the amount of files it's managing now.

I love it, but wouldn't want the program itself to run on a tablet.

5 Store eBook on SD Cards to play directly on it or Flash drive

I don't think this is so much a tablet thing, as will the reading apps on the table find the books on the SD card? I think most tablet reading apps cut out their own storage space on each device and put the books in that space, so they can find them. Unless you can tell them to look at the SD card, they won't know they're there.

What I've found that saves me a lot of space and loading books to individual programs on my Ipad is acutally a File Manager program. I can connect from my Ipad to my main computer, transfer files back and forth (really quickly!) and then store all my books in the File Manager program. Then I just go to it, click on a book, and it shows me all the apps on the Ipad that will open that book.

To sort the books, I manage them in Calibre with Tags, 'Send to Disk' with the title in the order I've chosen, then send the books over with the file manager.

I've found loading books into any of the readers on the Ipad a bit trick once you get past a couple of hundred. I'd look for a file management program for what ever tablet you chose, then just send to an app when ready to read. Tons easier that way.
