This is the first Janette Oke book that I have read. I really liked it. Especially the details of the everyday life in that time period. What a wonderful, easy and feel good read.

Janette Oke never fails to deliver. This book is a "soothing," read and, at least for me, is a blessing. You won't want to put this book down.

I love all her books that I have read so far.
Sweet story of a young woman called into the ministry. Tells of her struggle with her decision, the hardships she suffered and, of course, some romance. My copy is bound together with another of Janette Oke's novels, "Julia's Last Hope".

When young Emily Evans went off the Bible School, she had all she could do just to keep up with her studies, let alone discover God's will for her life. That discovery seemed to be limited to those who had everything together, not for those who struggled even to make it to class on time. Then comes the chapel hour when the vast needs of the prairie settlements are presented. To her surprise, Emily feels God's call into full-time Christian service.
Emily expects that along with His calling, God will also provide her with a companion to share her life and ministry. But Emily does not feel comfortable with agreeing to marry any of the young men who present themselves. The decision is made: On her own, Emily will take on the task of opening a new church in a pioneer community.
But were those struggling years of Emily's training sufficient preparation for all the responsibilities and challenges of running a parish? This is a nice book about a young girl who feels God's call to plant a church. She meets resistance from the town at first, but eventually make many friends. I really enjoyed reading it.

One of the Women of The West series, actually the first and it's sets the tone for all of them. This series is not connected to it's other books, other than it's another great Christian romance by Janette Oke set in the Old West!
She feels God nudging her toward ministry, but what options are there for a young single woman?
Emily Evans has a hard time getting herself to class on time, much less figuring out God's will for her life. Then, to her surprise, she feels that God is calling her into full-time Christian service. She expects the Lord will also provide her with a companion to share her life and ministry, but Emily does not want to marry any of the available young men. She squares her shoulders and decides she will accept the task of opening a new church in a pioneer community--alone.
When Emily arrives at her new assignment, she is disappointed to find the church building in disrepair. After many days of hard work fixing it up, she announces her first service and is once again disappointed, this time in the size of her congregation. Is her faith strong enough to stand against the local doubters and myriad challenges that will test her calling?

THIS IS ONE OF THE FIRST BOOKS BY JANNETTE OKE THAT I READ AS A GIRL. IT IS A WONDERFUL STORY OF HOW TO CONTINUE ON DESPITE ADVERSITY AND HARDSHIPS. IT TEACHES A WONDERFUL LESSON IN PERSERVERANCE. IT IS A GREAT STORY FOR YOUNGER GIRLS TO READ TO HELP THEM REALIZE THAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE WHATEVER THEY SET OUT TO DO, IF THEY WILL JUST HOLD ON.
I am of two minds about this book. On the one hand, it is a sweet, simple story with a happy ending. These are not bad traits in a comfort read. On the other hand, it seemed almost too simple and sweet this time around. It lacked the struggle for a relationship with God that I enjoyed in Jane Orcutt's The Living Stone. It lacked the nitty-gritty details of pioneer life that I appreciate in Lauraine Snelling's books. I can understand why I liked this book in my early teens, but ten years later, I feel as if I've outgrown it.

I've always been impressed with Janet Oke's storytelling. Been several years since I've read her, this book lives up to her reputation. Exciting story, believable characters and all about God. Awesome!
