I requested a book, but it wasn't marked mailed the last time I checked. Today I got a message saying she didn't mark it mailed, but mailed it yesterday and she said the transaction was cancelled. When I look at my account today, it says label printed today but not mailed and it also has the request date as today. Is this with a new person? Does it automatically request it again when it is timed out? And will I be getting two of the same book now?

It's possible that the first sender mailed the book you requested and forgot to mark the book mailed, so the request timed out.

Since the request timed out, your book was automatically requested from the next person in the FIFO line.

Looks like you will, as you said, be getting two books.

You can still mark books as received from your transaction archive, though.

So, the first sender who sent you a book will still be able to get her credit, if you mark it received with no problems.

That is probably with a new person.. You can click on the PM button to find out the name of the person and check. If the first one timed out of the system before she mailed it that was her bad. I know it tells you that if you don't mail the book AND mark it mailed by the mail date you lose your credit. You cannot cancel the new transaction as the sender already printed the label. So it is quite possible you will be getting two books.

You don't have to give the first person a credit and be out 2 credits when you only wanted 1 book.  It states in the rules that if you don't mark a book mailed you may not get a credit for it.  I would try to contact the 2nd sender and ask if they can cancel the request. If they haven't mailed it yet or printed postage then they might do it for you.

It says very clearly on the main account page when the deadline to mark a book mailed is and that they might not get a credit if they don't-so don't feel guilty if you don't give the 1st person a credit for the book.

Oh, yes. This is very true. I would just try to judge the situation. If you can re-post the book and easily get a credit for it and the sender just made an easy mistake or is a newbie, it wouldn't hurt to just give  her a credit for the book. But it's totally up to you and you should do what you feel is best.

Yes, it does automatically go to the next person in FIFO. If the second person has already printed a label, you can't cancel that request--if they use the PBS printable postage, I doubt that they would want to cancel it either since they cannot get a refund on that. You can certainly PM the second sender and ask if they can cancel the request and explain the situation. If they don't want to do that, then PM the first person and explain that, you're sorry but the request was cancelled and went to someone else who has already printed postage for the book and is sending it, so you will not be able to give them a credit as you shouldn't have to pay 2 credits for the same book.

Then you can quote the PBS guidelines stating that if this happens, you don't owe the member who didn't follow the rules a credit nor do you have to return the book. You might feel bad for the first sender, but this is how people learn to follow the rules, by missing a credit and screwing up and then dealing with the consequences--they are given reminders to mark books mailed (an e-mail is sent when the date is coming close where they MUST mark it, and it says right on the account page also....they are given a 2-day grace period, too.)
