This historical novel brings the American West (1830's) to life, with descriptions of buffolo hunts, moccasin making and surviving in the Rockies. The author has the grace and beauty of a natural storyteller with a complete dedication to historical accuracy and authenticity.

An interesting look into pioneer times, but rather slow moving. I had trouble getting through this one.

This is the first time I have read a book by this author. I grew up around the area he talks about and I could picture the area. If you like stories about old mountain men this is your book.

Winter was coming to the Rockies and Josiah Paddock didn't have much hope of survival...he was running from his past in St. Louis and didn't have many skills needed in the wilds...if the cold didn't kill him, the grizzlies or the Indians would..then his luck changed. He stumbled across the trail of an old mountain man eager enough for company to help him learn to survive. It was the man's skill with a knife and a gun that kept them both alive as they rode deep into the land of The Blackfeet and Crow, bible-spouting pioneers and sensual women where only the bravest and best survived...and only the lucky made the return trip again.
