Charles Whilden lived a very ordinary life with a string of bad luck, it seemed that followed him from location to location.

He applied for service in the Confederate Army 3 times before ever being accepted into the Army, and that was only after the Confederate was desperate to recruit anyone they could to fight.

He was plunged head first into the 1964 Grant's Campaign and discovered a courage deep inside of him that he had not needed before.

I thought the beginning was a little dry but once I got into the book, I didnt have a problem finishing it. Knowing it is a true story helped.
