Veri interesting reading. If you like medical mysteries and/or Patricia Cromwell's style of writing you will love this one.
This takes place on one of the bloodiest New Year's days in Virginia since the Civil War. There is a conspiracy afoot and Dr. Scarpetta is right in the middle and in danger. Suspicious drownings, her own people dying just for bringing back her car and her neice is in danger to boot. Dr. Kay Scarpetta must keep herself and those she loves from being the next victims in a long line of suspicious murders (deaths).

Part of the Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner of VA, series. Several of the CSI episodes on TV are based on this series. I say, start at the beginning... check patriciacornwell.com for a list of all the books in the series.

Very good book, unexpected plot twists, great lab scenes, a love affair and futuristic law enforcement robotics.

It has been a while since I read this book. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't the best Cornwell novel I have ever read. Short on character development, which is typical for these books, but still a good read.

I enjoy all the Dr. Kay Scarpetta books. This book begins with her diving at a Navy shipyard to view the body "at the scene". There seems to be a Navy stonewall and cover up.

It's New Year's Eve, the last day of Virginia's bloodiest year since the Civil War. Dr. Kay Scarpetta plunges into the murky depths of a ship graveyard to recover the very human remains of Ted Eddings, an investigative reporter. What kind of story was Eddings chasing below the icy surface of the Elizabeth River" And why did Scarpetta receive a phone call from someone reporting the death before the police were notified? She soon discovers that Eddings' murder is merely the first layer of something much deeper-a labyrinthine conspiracy that will put all of her criminal and forensic knowledge to the test like never before. For Scarpetta, the real challenge won't be cataloging the growing number of dead bodies, but preventing herself and those she loves from becoming the next victims.
This book, like the rest of the series is great!
This is the book that marked the downward spiral of the Scarpetta series ( except for Unnatural Exposure). The end was your basic "die hard" style action type ending that we have all seen before so many times.
So far, this was the best book in the series, even though parts of it, as well as characters, were fairly predictable. My only big complaint is that, once again, the ending felt a little rushed, but at least it was better written than in some of the previous books. And at least, not all the bad guys died because of trying to have some type of vendetta against Kay, even though she still managed to be there for at least one. She does seem to get around like that. Some easy reading if anyone likes forensic mysteries.
Patricia Cornwells Kay Scarpetta is a character who becomes addicting. Smart, Funny, brave, and tough she is a character who sticks with you, and you will find yourself wanting to read the whole series. Chapters are on the shorter side so the book is easier to digest.

I have read the entire Scarpetta series and have loved them all. This one is no exception.
good
Cornwell at her best.
I got hooked on these, read as much of the series as I had in a week, and promptly forgot them. Fun!
Patricia Cornwell's heroine Dr. Kay Scarpetta is back; this time to solve the mystery of the death of an Associated Press reporter who was killed while nosing about in a decommissioned navy yard. Scarpetta's involvement in the case leads her to be targeted for murder herself by a nasty little neo-fascist cult with delusions of grandeur that include a plan to "kill and maim, frighten, brainwash and torture" all who oppose their plan to rule the world. Helping Scarpetta is her niece Lucy, an F.B.I. agent whose computer expertise leads to a heart-stopping journey into cyberspace.
Cornwell's book is very suspenseful as she interacts with her niece, Lucy, the FBI computer guru to solve the mystery of the death. Good read.

Just another great book by Patricia Cornwell. Another page turner
What can you say about a scarpetta novel? Good as always!
Good mystery hate to put it down.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta plunges into the murky depths of a ship graveyard torecover reamins of Ted Eddings, an investigative reporter. Why did she receive a phone callreporting the death before police were notified?
This crime fiction author never fails to amaze with detail, etc. This book was published (and read by me) in 1997---I don't really remember the details, but I have all her books so you know I enjoy her.

Kay Scarpetta continues to battle against the warped evil in men.
one of her best. fascinating...keeps you reading
Loved it!
Patricia Cornwell is a great author... or so I've been told. I have read several of her books and I just don't think they are that great. However, Many other people like her and she's selling more books than I am, so I don't feel I have room to complain.
Classic Cornwell. Another chapter in the Kay Scarpetta saga.
This was the first book I read by Patricia Cornwell. I have since read most of the books she has written. This one remains my favorite.
I didn't like this one as much as her others
A Dr. Kay Scarpetta novel. I'm hooked on this series, I really like the character of Kay, very human.
This book reaffirms that Patricia Cornwell is one of the best crime fiction writers. This is another Kay Scarpetta novel and is well-worth reading.
Keeps your attention right to the end.
great
Very suspenseful. Loved it.
I'm a big fan of the Kay Scarpetta novels and this is a nice one, with a coastal setting.
Never read book.
This book has been passed aroung my cirle of friends and family so it shows some wear and tear. Typical Cornwell-tense, gutwrenching and scary. Cover is entact, somewhat curling at the edges but the book is in good enough conditon to be read by you and passed around your cirle of reading buddies. Enjoy.
I liked this book.. it wasn't as good as the previous Scarpetta's though.
Very exciting.
well written. engaging main character.
Good read!
Another great story from Cornwell.
The Philadelphia Inquirer said of this book, "All but impossible to put down until the final page." I can vouch for that as I read it in one sitting, right through the night!
Cornwell is gripping as always.
Kay Scarpetta plunges into a cold ship gravyard to recover remains of an investigative reporter, and now has to figure out what he was working on that got him killed - and might get her killed, too. Good story.

I love Patricia Cornwell. If you are a Kay Scarpetta fan you wont be disappointed
Although, it is well written. Dr. Kay Scarpetta is not my type of person. I did not enjoy the book.
This is a great Scarpetta novel, one of the better ones in my opinion.
AWESOME READ!!!!!
