ISBN 1887942483 - I do believe that Hooked on Phonics is harboring a secret! You've read tons of really good, great, even superb, children's books, I'm sure. I'll bet that you never thought Hooked on Phonics, being all educational and stuff, would be the place to find any of those - but you'd be wrong!
A little boy grocery shops with his mother, helping to pick out cereal. In the morning, his mother gets the cereal for everyone - one healthy kind for Dad, one doesn't-make-you-fat kind for Mom, and for the kid... the fun kind. It's green. It's also in the coolest box ever. Coolest. Cereal box. Ever. In it, he finds frogs and toy cats and a hat for Dad… and so much more! It's a pity adults can't see what kids see!
I've fallen in love with some of the HOP books, much to my amazement, but this one really blew me away. Author and illustrator David McPhail has created a book here that I'd like to have in hardcover for the keeper shelf! The text is flawless, the reader can almost hear the voice of a child telling the story. The words are simple enough for a second grader and the story is still incredibly engaging. In a world that no longer has very cool toys in most cereal boxes, you might expect that the boy in the book found one of those, so when he starts pulling out everything but the kitchen sink, it's a fun surprise that the illustrations bring to hilarious life.
