Last week when I printed out my labels with dc it said the cost for the ec was 0.00.  This week once again I am being charged .19.  Does this mean they will not charge me at the p.o.??  The total on package  is 2.66 which is what I paid total last week at the p.o. If they charge me an additional .19 at the P.O. tomorrow the cost will be $2.85

When they first started the "Gold Key" membership, the label would print out $0.00, but the PO still charged the $.19 and PBS charged the $.27 (I think that's the amount).  If you have a "Gold Key' membership then I don't think you are charged the $.27 by PBS or the $.19 by the Postal Service.  As of this afternoon (3/18), PBS was still printing the $.19 additional PO postage and charging my account for DC.  One of the books I'm mailing out tomorrow - postage at PO and DC - postage $2.47, DC $.19 total $2.66.  HTH.  Pat

Pat,

Mine up until today said 0.00 for dc.  So if we are paying .19 on here and .19 at the p.o. we will be paying $2.85 to mail a book

eDC is free for first class packages but still costs $.19 for media mail.

I think the system was originally not putting the $.19 on media mail, but you will be charged it once at the PO at the time of mailing.  Gold key members do have to pay the transaction fee to PBS for printing the DC and the $.19 fee if it is sent media.

I have not been paying the .19 for about 2 weeks, when I print labels on hereThey add the .19 at the post office. So I will be paying $2.85 to mail a book now.

I'm a bit confused.  You shouldn't be paying $.19 to PBS at all.  There is a PBS charge of $.27 for printing the DC.  If the extra $.19 is printing out on the label, it is not being paid to PBS but is showing that the item is going media mail and the PO will charge for the DC.  Your item tomorrow should still be just $2.66 to mail and there should have been a $.27 fee deducted and paid to PBS.  If you click the "Money" link at the top of the page it will show you what charges PBS made.

Ok I just checked and the only thing it shows it the $.27 but my labels all say $2.47  plus .19 for total of $2.66.   I wll find out tomorrow when I mail these if they charge my .19 at the post office.  Will let you all know.

Just confussed as to why it once again says .19  when it was saying 0.00

It's the pest again LOL.  I just checked back to Sept. 2011  and noticed that the .19 does not show on the money register at any time. So I don't think that is any way to check what is going on.  And since the .19 would go to the postal service and not pbs it wouldn't be on there

I'm pretty sure that the $0 that had been registering was a software error.  It should only read as $0 if it is a book light enough to ship via first class.  Anything media will show, and the PO will charge the $.19, but you will only be charged the $.19 once.

"I'm pretty sure that the $0 that had been registering was a software error...yes  That's my understanding also.  TPTB have been working on this, but your PO should be charging you .19 if you are not using printable postage...regardless of what the label says.

PBS e-DC is free with printable postage, but less trackable enroute.

As I said in an earlier post, the $.19 was registered on both the labels I printed off today (3/18).  Looking again, both are going media mail.  I take my packages to the PO and pay the postage there.  It printed off the cost of the postage for the books $2.47 and $2.89 respectively and added the $.19 to each for a total of  $2.46 and $3.08 respectively. (This is in addition to the $.27 that PBS charges for the DC label).  It's still cheaper than what the PO charges.  They've always charged me the $.19 at the PO if I use DC (never thought about 1st class mail, so will need to look next time I mail a book 1st class).  Pat

A summary with the change in the postal rates:

with PBS full postage:

-eDC is included on all packages (for media mail, this will be trackable on PBS but not on usps.com)

with PBS-DC only:

-a fee of 0.27 to PBS on all classes plus:

-0.19 on media mail for the eDC in addition to the postage (this was something the post office did not tell PBS correctly at first and the wrappers were printing incorrectly with 0.00) Because you are paying for this, it should be trackable on both PBS and usps.com

-all FC packages include eDC for free so no additional charges above the normal postage should be added at the post office (this is a free eDC and may not be trackable on usps.com, I don't have one to confirm).

I use USPS Shipping Assistant for my labels and postage. DC is 0.19 for both Media and First Class but free only for Priority Mail.  I'm not sure why this would be any different through PBS unless PBS is subsidizing the 0.19 for First Class Parcels.

I'd venture to guess the difference is you are buying directly from the USPS. The free DCs are trackable only in the PBS system, probably a new service offered to companies who sell e-services.

Theresa, I use shipping assistant as well and since January, there has not been a charge for DC on First Class packages.  You may want to see if your software needs an upgrade.  However, even if it is printing on the label, the PO should not be charging for DC on anything being sent via First Class w/ eDC of any kind (only charging the retail rate if the green barcode label is used).
