In this book Watchman Nee shows a welcome awareness of this. Taking the patriarchal experiences as his text he places the "givenness" of the life in Christ, as illustrated for us in Isaac the beloved son, in a reassuringly larger setting. Abraham before him is shown to reflect the miracle of the believer's election to an age-long purpose, while Jacob who follows displays that convincingly real transformation of character without which any so-called "way of holiness" must inveitably be suspect. The books later chapters, with their emphasis on the patient perseverance of the Holy Spirit of God, are in this respect most satisfying.« less
