I had no idea where else to post this. My grandpa passed away before I was born, and his name was Oval. When I was younger, I asked my grandma why he had such an unusual name, and she said the story she heard was my great-grandma read a book while she was pregnant, and the hero's name was Oval, and she admired this character so much, my grandpa got the name. I've tried searching and searching every way I know how, but can't seem to find any book with a man named Oval. Has anyone ever come across one? Figured this was the best place to ask!

Do you know what year your great grandmother was pregnant?  And was she living in the US or some other country?

Also - just a thought, but there was a time when serialized novels were printed in newspapers, but nowhere else.  I suspect that would be extremely hard to find, unless archived newspapers are available from that time and place.

And finally - not to denigrate your G-grandma's literacy levels, but older typeface could make "Oral" or "Orval" look a lot like "Oval."

You know, I wonder if it wasn't an actual character but the name of a book or story she really liked, like The Oval Portrait by Edgar Allen Poe.......
