I am looking for a novel about Charlemagne, for the 500 to 800 challenge category.  I found one book here The Nuns Story  about St. Amelia and Charlemagne, but the reviews aren't promising.   If you know of a book about Charlemagne or something else that fits in this time period.  I would love to hear about it.  I prefer to stay in Europe.

Or has anyone read, Paths of Exile by Carla Nyland

There might be some ideas in this thread from HFO.

I have Charlemagne and Roland by Allan Massie. I haven't read it yet, but it looks real good. Plus, it's short at just over 200 pages.

Massie's Charlamagne book is part of his "Dark Ages" trilogy, but I think each book can be read as a standalone. I got an ARC of the first book in the trilogy, "The Evening of the World", but I've been putting off reading it because the reviews I have seen have just about all been bad. I'm still not sure if these reviewers thought the book was bad or just the subject matter.

I wanted to get the whole trilogy and then read it, but I removed the others from my wishlist because none of the books have gotten good reviews, not that I have seen anyway. It's puzzling because Massie's Roman novels are almost universally loved.

Genie, when you get around to reading Charlemagne, I will be very eager to see what you think of it. If it's bad, I can cull another book from my own TBR. ;-)

I'm also interested in Massie's book - Caligula -  but the few reviews I have read for it have all been bad too. :-/
