Excellent read depicting the old South and the struggles in Charleston during its fall. This book also has a great deal of factual information about the events leading up to the Civil War.

Charleston follows the lives, loves and shifting fortunes of the unforgettable Bell family, from the American Revolution through the turbulent antebellum years to the savage defeat of the Confederacy. Jakes paints a powerful portrait of the Charleston aristocracy who zealously guard their wealth and privilege -- while harboring dark famly secrets that threaten to destroy them all. Peopled by a sprawling cast of memorable characters -- patriots and cowards, aristocrats and abolitionists, slaves and freedmen, heroic men and courageous women -- Charleston represents America's premier storyteller at his very best.

"Captivating...A review can't adequately describe the sweeping scope of Charleston and the many characters that Jakes weaves together to tell his tale. The book is a great read and a wonderful escape."--The Chattanooga Times. (front page)
