on WL's for books?  The only times I can be sure I'm "moving up" is when I'm in the middle of the pack or in 1st place ;D  I keep trying to see myself "moving" but it's difficult.   Of course I have a huge number of books on my WL - but I'm 'way in the back for most of them!  I started going to the web-site Fantastic Fiction to see what's about to be released and try to get in early on some of the WL's.  Then I find out that an author I read ages ago has written a new book in theseries I finshed.  Now I have to try to remember the details and characters.  Anybody have that problem?

I check my place in line more often than I should :) With some books, I'm consistently moving up on the list, but with others I seem to always be in the same place...

I check mine, too.  Sometimes the numbers just blur together, but as I get closer to the top of a list, it's easier to track.

I should add, while some lists do move quickly, some move very slowly, and some not at all.  I have been #1 (or close to #1) for several books for months (or even longer than a year) now.

every now and then, especially if I'm going to put my shelf on hold so I can change books to autorequest if I'm near the top

I Tag everything on my wishlist, with the number  I  started at and then the number I'm at now. Like this exp. 50/2 and then if I go down a number I delete it and put where I am now. This makes it really easy to keep track, I can just go down the list and hover over the (!).

Angela, that's a great idea.  I think I'm going to try it.  Mine seem to just blur together, too, and I'd like to know the rate of change at the least.  Thanks! ;D

The only time I check where I am is if I'm making an Amazon order and want to order one that I'm still low on the list.  Otherwise I just let them move and I get them when I get them.

I have a weird ritual where I check my WL on the first of every month (or thereabouts) and see where I am. I print out my WL once every 3 months and note on it next to the book what "place" I'm in. Then when I check the next month, I write where I am then so I can see what progress (or lack thereof) I'm making. Sometimes when I think I'm going nowhere, it just "seems" that way and I'm actually moving right along in the list. Others, I think I've moved up, but when I check back, it's like....Oh. I've been #4 for 9 months...LOL Sometimes in those cases I'll just look for the book elsewhere and delete it if it's one I really want to read.

I frequently check my position in line, but not as much as I did a week ago when I joined. I like to see if I've moved up any and if anybody has gotten in line behind me. I'm sure it'll get to the point where I don't think about it.

I do find it annoying to have to hover over the exclamation point to see my position. I've started going to the mobile wish list page because it has "Position: # of #" on the webpage as it should be (and loads much faster :) .)

oh, that mobile page is neat.  hmm.  but only 10 books per page.  now with 199 books on my WL, i wonder if it's faster to go through the 10 mobile pages, or the 4 regular pages and only hover over the ones i think might have moved?  probably the normal page, since the mobile page doesn't show tags, and that's how i tell which of the ones on my shelf aren't out yet (which is a fairly good percentage of them).

still, dang cool, and super useful while you still have a short WL.

"I Tag everything on my wishlist, with the number I started at and then the number I'm at now."

Oh, so you're the one! :P I often see random tags and wonder if the people don't realize that tags are seen by everybody.

"oh, that mobile page is neat. hmm. but only 10 books per page."

You can alter the listing by manually finagling the parameters at the end of the URL. The number for "l" is the number of books to list per page, and the "ls" is the starting position (the first book listed will be the next book on the list.) Just specify the quantity to list per page, and the Next links will reflect that amount. So to list 100 books from the beginning, use this URL: paperbackswap.com/mobile/wish_list.php?l=100&ls=0

If you want to keep an eye on just the 10th book on your list, use this: paperbackswap.com/mobile/wish_list.php?l=1&ls=9

Edited to add: I should also say that the same parameters apply to all of the lists, not just the WL and not just the mobile version.

Tim  - 2 more excellent ideas!  It surely is neat to have such knowledgable members!  I did go tag those pages (sorry if it bugs anyone else) so I can see where I am vs. where I started.  On some I've moved up.  On some the WL got longer.  And on some both happened.  Then, of course, nothing changed on all the others. ;D   But it reassuring to see some movement - and only in one day!  Little things make me happy!

Well, not really...there are people like me who got so annoyed by the multiple weird tags (some of them quite lengthy) that we used the option to turn all tags off! :-D

I printed my wish list off and drew a little graph in the blank spece to the side where I keep a running list.  For example, on Day 1 I'm 290 in line, so I put 290 in my first box.  Then on Day 2 I'm down to 237, so I cross off 290 and put 237 in the second box, and so on.  I've found it works really well to see how fast lines are moving, as long as you don't mind printing a bunch of pages and drawing graphs on them ;-)
