Hey Diane, I got you in a PM, but I thought I would leave a comment here for anyone else who had a problem understanding the recipe!
The instant pudding is the "frosting" for the cake. You can serve it with or without the cool whip on top. I just happen to love the way it tastes when you plop a spoonful on top of the cake once it is "frosted" with the pudding, my family loves it this way as well!
