Abridged Edition
As I did in my review of "Alaska", let me reiterate that I DO NOT typically listen to "Historical Fiction". I had to read this book in college - it was required! This time, it was my choice! Glad I grew up enough to make that choice!
I live in Virginia, close to the Chesapeake - so it has some familial significance, but I never knew I knew so little about it! (yeah, I meant to write that).
Michner's vividly detailed descriptions of the estuaries of the Chesapeake, mixed with the chronology of the principle families, all intricately woven with and spiced up with historical events have made this my most memorable "historical" novel. I still remember the book!
If you enjoy historical Fiction, this is for you! The storyline is rich in details of Chesapeake life. The true main characters are the bay itself, the Choptank River, and the fictional Devon Island.
Not knowing what your primary genre of books is, all I can say is that if you are looking for a little change of pace - try this one! It's a lot shorter than the book (I seem to remember the book being about a million pages) Who knows- you may want to come visit the Bay sometime after listening to this. I envision you probably developed some yearnings to see Alaska after reading/listening to that Michner book.
