I don't understand this.  How does the program work if you don't show your books? I have encountered this statement several times.  What does that mean?  I want to show my shelf to everyone.  So please please look at me and order something so I can look at you too.

There are people who are paranoid that someone will take exception to something they've posted on the forums and order a book in order to get thier street address.  Same thing with hiding the wish list, only it works a little faster to faux post a WL book then print the lable for the addy.

They still get requests via FIFO.

I asked this of one of the PBSers once and was told that she had books on her shelves that she didn't want family or friends to know about so she kept it hidden.  That way they couldn't see her lists, and it truly did go FIFO for her.   Pat

I agree with Pat as I have heard the same thing that they may enjoy reading certain genres that they don't want their families and friends to know.

Some folks believe so strongly in the FIFO idea that they choose to hide their shelf.  I think some just set it all as private, not realizing that they have also hidden their shelf.  And I heard on one member who had fled a domestic abuse situation.  Her bookshelf was on private and her books went to a PO box to lessen the chance of being found.

Thanks bunches I hadn't thought of any of those reasons.  Now I won't take it so personally.

THere are some die-hard FIFO followers who don't believe books should be ordered direct from someone's shelf.  They just hurt themselves in that they pass up chances to save some postage money. I personally want to save on postage any chance I get.  And I don't care if people see erotic books on my shelf-they don't usually sit there for more than a few hours anyway.

But how about a book that you received as a gift?  Want your family to see you posting it?

Isn't there a setting to show your buddies your shelf but not everyone?

If I read the book I would have no guilt over posting it here.

Emily, IIRC there is a setting to allow buddies to view your wishlist (or whatever information you set it for).  Look under your
'Settings' tab and 'Privacy Controls'
