With Christ in the School of Prayer Author:Andrew Murray Andrew Murray (1828-1917) was born in South Africa of Scottish missionary parents. Sent to Scotland and Holland at age 10 for schooling, he was preparing for the ministry when he experienced conversion and commitment to Christ at age 17. Ordained at 20, he returned to South Africa and was assigned a Dutch Reformed pastorate among the pioneer far... more »mers of remote Orange River and the Transvaal. Emma, his creative and supportive wife, shared his love for God and people; they had eight children.
Andrew later pastored in Worcester, Cape Town, and served the church in Wellington for 34 years. He founded activities to draw Africans into Christ's church, established a seminary for women, and raised funds for evangelists. Six times he was elected Moderator of the South African Dutch Reformed Church, and several times successfully defended the church and the faith in civil courts.
During his 88 years he wrote 240 books and tracts in Dutch and English. His writings center on devotion and commitment to Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the life of prayer. In his pastorates, evangelistic travels across South Africa, Europe and America, and especially in his writings, Andrew Murray drew children, young people and adults to Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior who filled all his vision.
Andrew Murray's WITH CHRIST IN THE SHCOOL OF PRAYER is a spiritually powerful and beautiful piece of writing. Our purpose in updating some of his wording is simply to render his nineteenth century style more easily understandable for twentieth century readers. The heart and soul of the message remains the same. And it is our prayer, as it has been throughout the work on this book, that the blessing also remains the same.« less
