Behold in this verse, the chart of salvation laid down, and redeeming love in its origin, its prosecution, and its finished work. Trace the stream of blessing from the everlasting hills in which it rises, to the ocean in which it makes its bed. See it originating in the eternal purpose, manifested in the effectual call and justification of the elect children of mankind, and accomplishedin the final glorification of the human soul and body, in the kingdom of God. All the blessedness that God can give, or that your capacious hearts require to make you happy, is comprehended in this single text. Now, we shall never be established in the gospel, till we have received all the doctrines here announced. The reason that the faith of many of us is so sickly is, that we take up with sections of divine truth, instead of embracing the whole counsel which God has made known. We select certain views which we call essential, and omit others which in our folly we call non-essential: and we compound a system of divinity for ourselves, and we call this the gospel. And then we wonder that it does not bring with it the comfort, and the confidence, and the joy of faith, which we feel that the truth as it is in Jesus should bestow. We do not see that we have spoiled the cordial of some of its ingredients; mutilated the temple of some of its buttresses; neglected some of that panoply of proof wherewith God meant to clothe us;—andthat therefore we are sickly, and insecure, and defenceless.
