Were you good little ones this year? Did Santa bring you something special, like a Nook or a Kindle or another ereader? Welcome to the dark side, where there may not be cookies but there are free and inexpensive books.

First piece of advice: RTFM! 90% of your questions can be answered by simply reading the manual. Honest.

First and a half piece of advice: Let the battery fully charge the way the manual tells you to before you start playing with the thing.

If you RTFM and still don't know what to do, or if your manual was translated from Martian by a Wookie, then ask away. There are no stupid questions. You will not find your question being made fun of on some ereader forum somewhere. We promise. After all, if you can't trust a PBSer, whom can you trust?

Thank you Marilyn, for starting this thread! I received my Kindle last night - woohoo! Now I am trying to find a good case for it. Can you recommend a couple ?  I think that I might prefer one that you can "stand" up - unless you experts have found some problems with that. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Nancy checking in with my brand new Nook and I have an Adobe Digital Editions/ Sony Reader store/Nook question.

My library from B&N transferred over just fine. I got my Adobe Digital Editions software installed ok (I thought). When I went to download my first book from Free Library Philadelphia, instead of downloading into the ADE software, it downloaded into the Sony Reader Store software as a purchased book (they must use a version of Adobe as the basis for their store software). I don't own a Sony Reader, but I set up an account a while back to get their free book offers in the hopes of being able to transfer them over to the Nook since they're both ePub. I managed (ok, DH managed) to get the books in the Sony Reader Library into the ADE, BUT 1) the library book is listed in the purchased section rather than the borrowed section and 2) none of those books will load on to the Nook. When I have the Nook hooked up to the computer, the Nook shelf appears in ADE.

Anybody got any ideas or do I need to uninstall everything and start over? Is there a way to keep the files for the free books on my computer somewhere and delete that whole Sony Reader Library software?

I bought an M-Edge Platform case for my Kindle, and it works really well. It also has a space to tuck in a light if you need one to read in bed. The covers run from 19.99 to 39.99, depending on Kindle version, and whether you buy leather or synthetic leather.

I have a Marware flip case, and I love it. It has a sheath on the back so you can slide your hand in and hold it comfortably.

The Standard Kindle leather case is  very nice, but there are problems with it shorting out the Kindle and it is not recommended you purchase one (this applies so far to the ones without the light).

I have an M-edge cover that stands up.  I'll only used it standing up the one time that I ate lunch in a restaurant by myself.  It was terrific for that.  It also has a pocket in which I keep my "read the Bible in a year" schedule.  It is a little larger than the Amazon basic cover.

Now, having written all that, I just realized that most of you ereader newbies have the K3.  I have the K2, but maybe the covers have the same advantages/disadvantages.  Also, the M-edge cover is easy to remove or put the Kindle back in it.

From the research that I've done since LAST NIGHT, Vivian, it seems like anything that fits the K2 should fit the new generation or K3 (?). I have a Kindle 3 G and everything I've clicked on for covers includes the Kindle 2, so I'm hoping I've got it right.

Nancy,

Welcome to the world of Nook! I got mine this morning.

Intead of saving the e-book when you download it, you open it.  It goes into the Adobe program and you transfer it there by manually moving it (left click on the file, drag and drop to the Nook).

The problem I am having is that my Nook is showing that User is not authorized even though I did all the steps to authorize the Nook.  It appears to be an issue many people have. My husband is trying to find the answer to that one.

UPDATE: I now have the same problem Dorothy has and it appears a LOT of people must have gotten Nooks this morning because the B&N website is crashing right now. So, I'm going to quit messing with this until the AM and read one of the B&N books that downloaded fine and see what the morning brings. However, if anyone gets an answer before then, please post.

Just wanted to say hi to all the fellow newbies---I got a Kindle today and already posted my question but i'm having issues with the highlighted information (with the dashes underneath the words) and the number of people who did it.  I have a K3.  Any help would be appreciated.  Also I have a leather cover w/o lighter (my parents bought the lighter seperately) and so far no issues.  (crossing fingers)

Re: User not activated error with ADE

Tuesday

I know this is an old thread... but wanted to post something out there for anyone who might be getting the Nook for xmas.

I had the same problem on my PC.  What fixed the problem?

1. Exit out of Adobe Digital Editions

2. Connect Nook to PC

3. Delete 2 directories.  Digital Editons and .adobe.digital.editions...  (something along those lines)

4. Open ADE

5. Connect Nook

6. Reauthorize

Success.  Good luck, really, really disappointed that I had this many problems with the device.

What my husband did... we don't know what ended up fixing it.
He hooked the Nook to the PC.
He deleted the two folders for Adobe Digital Addition and Digital Addition from Nook (using Internet explorer). He named the Nook in the Settings area. He removed any files that I had attempted to use. Then he
started the Adobe Digital Additon again. It then allows you to Authorize the Noon. He then loaded a book from Adobe and it working.

Keri, here's what it said on Amazon:

Viewing Popular Highlights

Amazon displays Popular Highlights by combining the highlights of all Kindle customers and identifying the passages with the most highlights. The resulting Popular Highlights help readers focus on passages that are meaningful to the greatest number of people. Some books don't have enough highlighting in them to have Popular Highlights. Popular highlights are marked with a gray dashed underline in your reading. You can see Popular Highlights for all books that have them at kindle.amazon.com.

To view Popular Highlights:

  1. Open a book on your Kindle.
  2. Press the Menu button and select "View Popular Highlights" from the options.

To turn Popular Highlights on and off:

  1. Navigate to Kindle's Home screen and press the Menu button.
  2. Select "Settings."
  3. Select the desired option next to "Popular Highlights."

YIPPEE! I got a Kindle this morning from my wonderful family.  It took  me a bit to get my WIFI set up; but that's done.  I've even ordered one free book from Amazon.  That was easy too.

But call me crazy, doesn't this have a backlight so I can read in bed without a book light?  Or do I still need to use a book light?

TIA!

Irene, there's no backlight in any e-ink ereader. It's lovely, because there's less eyestrain for those of us who find backlighting difficult, and you can read your e-ink ereader anywhere you can read a paper book -- like in bright sunshine. I find I can read in lower light by bumping up the font size, but no, you can't read in the dark. You'll need a reading lamp or one of the many clip-on lights that are available.

Hi everyone! Ok. I have a question about my kindle. I got it a little over a wk ago and ive read several books on it already. Loving everything about it. But...I tried for the first time to send documents to my kindle address with the word FORMAT in the subject line. Everything ive read says that they will format it for the kindle and then send it to your kindle. Now when i turn on my kindle they are there but it says "you have 4 documents waiting to be delivered to your kindle via WI-FI. You need to enable WI-FI connectivity on your kindle device to download these documents for no charge."  What? I have no idea how to "enable WI-FI". Ive tried playing with it and reading through the manual but im still not getting it. I dont know if im just overlooking something or if its just going right over my head! Help!

I received a NOOKcolor for Christmas, but, like others, I can't access my account.  I'm sure I will have questions once I do.laugh

Melissa, format is incorrect. You need to put the word convert in your subject line. Amazon will convert pdf, txt, doc, html, rtf documents. For mobi, prc, azw documents, no need to put convert in the subject line.

Also, click menu on the kindle, at the top it will say wireless on or off, and turn it on.  You probably already know that, just thought I'd throw it out there. Is your home wireless secured with a password? Mine isn't so it hooks right up.

Phil, you should be able to register your Nook and access anything connected to the B&N website. Adding additional content not from them is my only issue right now.

Nancy:  These are just guesses, as I still don't have an eReader. (Still holding out, too cheap.)

You have to authorize the Adobe Digital Editions software, too.

As for the Nook / Sony issue, play around with your Nook, the Nook software and the Options. Maybe somewhere it will say something like, "Make Nook your default." play around with the options in the Sony Reader Library software, too. Sounds like the Sony made itself your default eReader somehow.

As for moving the borrowed books elsewhere, I created a different folder within my eBook folder for Borrowed Library books. In the Toolbar at the top of the screen, click File, then New Folder. Name the Folder. Then when it comes to downloading, when the gray box appears, asking if I want this file in the eBook folder, I double click on the Borrowed Library Books Folder instead. Make sure the box heading shows that folder. Then download.

Do you have a wireless modem? And did you encrypt it and password so no one other than your home computers can access your Internet service? If so, you have to set up your Kindle the same password so it can use your home WI-FI. Unless you live in an area where you get a public WI-FI signal in the air, you have to use your home Internet service.

You can't change the screen saver or wallpaper on a Kindle.

ETA- I take that back. I know you can't download new screen savers or wallpapers on the Kindle, but I am sure you can change it between whatever comes pre loaded on it.
