A Circle of Quiet - Crosswicks Journals, Bk 1 Author:Madeleine L'Engle This journal shares fruitful reflections on life and career prompted by the author's visit to her personal place of retreat near her country home.
Read this as a piece of history -- not so much for the maternal advice about balancing a writing life and family--but for a glimpse into what made the woman find her voice in children's literature. She is not as revealing as other memoirists, keeping a distance between the reader and her inner life. Still, if you enjoyed her fiction, it is worth reading.
I'm not quite sure how a set of excerpts from a writer's journal can make up a lyrical book, but Madeleine L'Engle manages to do so with A CIRCLE OF QUIET. Well worth reading just for the writing style, not counting the content. You'll probably want to start it again once you've finished it.
By the author of A WRINKLE IN TIME, MEET THE AUSTENS, and A SWIFTLY TILTING PLANET for young people as well as many adult books.
p.s. The YA books make great reading for adults, too.
Currently 4/5 Stars.

"My favorite of all Madeleine L'Engle's books. Lovely, charming, a book to cherish. I know it will give great consolation to ordinary people who sometimes wonder why they bother to get out of bed in the morning." Quote by Jean Kerr.
