I enjoyed this first book of the series. I read it long ago however rereading it, well it was like a new story. I knew what had to happen but all the details were like new. I highly recommend reading it again for those that read it before. The main character is wonderfully developed. There is so much detail about the countryside it made it feel very real.

Book #1 of this facinating series. Set in pre-historic times. Five year old orphaned Ayla is adopted by a clan of people who are vastly different from her people. Although deeply loved by her adopted mother, other members of the Clan fear & hate her because of her differences. Ayla must try to bend to the Clan's wishes, but finds it difficult.

I read this book three times before deciding to part with it. I read the entire series but love the first one the best. The movie never did it justice. Her attention to detail and the female protagonist made it a very pleasurable read. More than once.

I found this series by pure fluke, I happen to see the 2sd book in the series(Valley of Horses) on my step mothers book shelf. I saw that there was another book before it so I found it (Clan)-wanting to read the series in order-and started reading, it is such a great book that I didn't hardly put it down until it was finished and then I couldn't get to the next book soon enough!
Jean Auel is such an amazing writer, I have never found another writer like her before. She puts in so much detail to her books that while reading them you feel as though you really are there. There are times when reading the series that I feel like so much a part of the story that I almost expect to look up and see some of the people in the book. She writes her books so that while reading them it almost plays like a movie your head.
In all of her books in this series I have felt just about every emotion that you can think of, laughter and happiness, tears and sorrow, hate and anger, and love.

This is one of my favorite books, I reread the whole series about every three years or so. When I first read this book there was no series, I have read the series every time a new book was published. They are so vivid and real that they are like a wonderful movie in my mind.
