Really well thought out workbooks for use in classic curriculum with texts such as Mcguffeys Readers. As a companion to the text it helps give structure to practicing newly learned materials. It isn't a step by step curriculum tool but certainly helps organize lessons by age/grade and text level. Nice to have when you are homeschooling and like a little extra help with lessons and practice structure.

Pros-

*Simple to use, no need for long planning sessions, just pick up the workbook and go.

*Builds slowly upon skills in a slow methodical ryhthym. You can clearly look at the first and then last lessons to see progress. Not just fluff and pictures for kids to burn time. Not all academic workbooks are made alike, this one has a clear goal which is a nice change from the colorful modern mega workbooks that mix skills in a random order and seem to go nowhere.

*Huge bonus for myself was that it is very generic in it's religious theme. I lean toward secular education and was worried that the Mcguffeys readers and these accompanying modern workbooks would be too preachy. This was not at all the case, most references were benign and related to general morality and good behavior, things all kids should know.

*Each level is broken down into 4 parts/seperate workbooks. Aside from purchase price or usage of credits it is actually more managable. It is much less intimidating to a younger student to digest one chunk at a time as they have broken it down. There is nothing like a childs sense of pride and accomplishment at the end of each workbook.

Cons- (all very small)

*Older, less common word usage for some things. Nothing confusing just very proper old fashioned way of "speaking" (writing) in the stories that could feel awkward to some.

*Black and white so not super visually stimulating. Really lovely old fashioned illustrations. (For me this was all a pro rather than con, depends on your childs learning style)

*No step by step "how to" directions. This is not a part of a full curriculum. It is just a workbook so if that is what you want you will be very pleased.

*No answer key but at this level a parent should be able to correct it and go over it quickly.

I am very happy with all of the workbooks in this series. I would suggest you NOT order them out of my own greediness because I really want to complete my collection soon! : )
