Joanna May thought herself unique, indivisible - until one day, to her hideous shock, she discovered herself to be five: that though childless she was a mother: that though an only child she was surrounded by sisters young enough to be her daughters - Jane, Julie, Gina and Alice, the clones of Joanna May.

What will it be like for Joanna when she meets the clones? And what about the clones themselves? How are they different and how the same? Will they withstand the shock of first meeting? And What of the avenging Carl, Joanna's former husband and the clones creator; will he take revenge for his wife's infidelity and destroy her sisters one by one?

Now in her 60s, attractive Joanna May has lost her husband, ruthless executive Carl, to divorce, and her lover to death, apparently a victim of her husband's hitman. Alone and childless, Joanna tries to regroup and in doing so makes an extraordinary discovery: Carl had four eggs removed from her reproductive system and "cloned" when she was 30. The four resulting women, implanted as embryos in different women, eventually meet up with one another and with Joanna.

This is exceptionally well written, tongue-in-cheek book, full of high spirit and wit. Fay Weldon's reputation is well earned. I enjoyed The Cloning of Joanna May immensely.
