Just happened today. credits bought or sold between members will now be 3$. We are told this will keep the club strong. I guess they want people to earn credits the old fashioned way by posting books for request. I guess too many people were buying credits for 2$ in order to request stuff without posting anything.

I commented in the thread, saying I think it's a GREAT idea. No, I don't sell credits, so it doesn't impact me (except in the pocketbook if I want to buy them). At first, I didn't see their thread (Michele and others, it's the FIRST one in the BB), and was wondering WTH people were thinking, with a bunch of people listing them for $3. And then I saw the thread! :-)

I don't sell credits but I am glad they have set a price limit. I want people to post more books to get the credits.

I didn't see the new rule either. I just wondered why everyone was suddenly asking $3 when most of the time people were selling them for $2. I tried to sell some a while back for 2.20 just to raise some money for postage, and I got a snide remark from someone telling me that was way too high. I thought it was reasonable considering that sending out 1 book was 2.72 at that time. I stopped trying to sell any since it wasn't worth it for $2 each. I'm glad to see a set price to keep everyone selling on an evel keel, and the $3 will at least cover the cost of mailing books one at a time. That's really why I wanted to sell some in the first place since the postage to send out one at a time is killing me.

If I need one for the rare wl book I get offered, and I'm out, I'll just buy one from the club..

I don't see how this is going to cause people to post more books.

Those who were buying for $2 will not suddenly post enough books to get the same credits for a higher shipping rate.  They will simply have fewer credits, thus fewer requests.

Those selling credits will not be able to sell the same number for $3 so they have less need of credits.  So they will post less books.  (A reason I have so few on my shelf--I have more credits than I need right now, and it wasn't worth it to me to sell for <$3 because I don't want to work so hard to get multi-book requests to cut shipping. So I cut my posting way back until/if my incoming comes near my outgone).

While the first group may post some more books, I don't think it will come near making up for the second.

So the only results are slowing down credit sales and decreasing trade volume.  How does this make the club stronger?

If credits were worth $3 someone could have bought up all the $2 ones and then resold them at a profit.  They aren't. The credit prices are symptom of underlying problems at the site, not the actual problems.  TPTB needed to fix it so credits were worth more and the price would rise as there stopped being any for sale, not just artifically set a higher price.  The priced used to be higher.

Maybe it was just stuck. Maybe this will fix it all. That'd be nice--I'd go back to shipping if I could sell credits now and then at enough to cover my shipping when I ended up with too many.

I will hope this happens.  I don't expect it, but I will hope they are right this will make things better, and not just hide the problems.

The problem was that a number of members stopped maintaining bookshelves, instead just buying credits...taking books out of the system and not putting any back. That affects everyone who is here to swap books. All I know is that since the rise in the price of credits, less than a week, I have suddenly been offered over a dozen WL books! That says to me that people are suddenly posting the WL books they were sitting on because now it is cheaper to mail a book than buy a credit. That's how it makes the club stronger!

And my experience is the opposite...i don't think it has to do with credits though, rather what you read.

In my case its not true. I always have a book shelf & offer deals.( dont get orders) I post alot of WL books to people. and hardly ever get any WL offers in return. So for me it cost more to stay here,. I'm really not getting anything in back.  Thats why I sold credits, for amazon GC.  To buy wl books, and then I always posted them here.

anybody notice in the bazaar this morning somebody was trying to sell 10 credits for $29.95. There is always somebody trying to undercut everybody else. That was why credits had fallen to 2.00. Too much competition. I wonder if the thread about using credits to pay for a membership is still there.. A limited will be 4 credits now instead of 6.

It was suggested to me in one of the threads about selling credits that i should offer for every 3 credits bought , you get one free.   i didnt try it because I dont want to get in any trouble.......Is that even allowed?

Please don't do it. They are STRICTLY enforcing this new rule. You can offer deals on your books in the Bazaar. You cannot offer deals on your credits.

As posted in that thread, it will be the one exception to the new price minimum.

I wonder if there are more people selling credits now than there were when they were 2$. It looks like almost half the posting in the bazaar are for credits for sale. It doesn't seem like there were that many before. Maybe people aren't buying as many as they did before. hard to say.

There have always been many credit sellers in the Book Bazaar.

It looks like credit sales are slower, but some sellers are still selling out.  People on a budget will be buying less than they could afford before , but I think sales will pick back up once people get used to the price going bck up to $3. That was the going price in the Bazaar at one time.

I don't know if it has to do with the price of credits being set at $3, but it seems since this has happened I have finally had some books (4) posted from my wish list. Prior to this happening, I hadn't received a book since April. I think it's fair. It really shouldn't be cheaper to buy the credits than it is to earn them through swapping. After all, without the swapping of books to earn credits, there would be no books to need credits for.

Yesterday I sold 5 credits at the new rate. If people want to buy credits, they will still buy credits.

Yes, if I need credits, I'll willingly pay $3.  On another note, I've received offers for 5 wl books in the past week!  That's the most ever in that short a time period in my 10+ years at PBS!!

I do think wl books just depends on what you read. I have some mainstream stuff that the line moves on and I have many that have never been offered or last posted date was years ago. I don't have much hope for those no matter what policy changes are made. The ones that do move, due to posting to friends and such, I get skipped over so I've been in the number 1 slot for a few books and I see wish granted but I'm still at number 1 due to the book not being posted fifo. All that factor in..and a new one came up for me, a wl bookw as offerd to me a while back with a pm saying please order from my shelf. I didn't see anything I wanted to read and I pmed back a no thanks, just the wl book please. Then the book was canceled..I don't know if it was because I didn't order another one or she really misplaced it.

Wow, Michele, that's kind of a sneaky way to get someone to order from their shelf. I wonder if they even had the WL book, or just pretended they had it to list, to see if the recipient would order from their shelf, then they would cancel the WL book anyway. Sometimes the things people do just make me smh.

I agree too, that some books are rarely, if ever, posted. I have been #1 on several for at least a year or longer, but at least I have received some in the past couple of weeks, which is pretty good for me!

Michele, I would definitely report that to PBS as that violates rules.

I wonder why TPTB didn't mention the new price for credits in the newsletter that just came out...
