In the past week I've had two different people with two different books do the same thing. They both say that they forgot to click that the books have been mailed and to cancel any other requests that come up or else I'll receive two books. Then when I get my book to go into my transaction archive and click received.

With one seller this has been going on for two weeks. I request, wait a long time, then receive a message about how they were mailed just not clicked as mailed and to cancel any other orders that come up.

The thing is both books have been on my waiting list for a very, very long time and the only other books that keep coming up are theirs. So how would they both know that I'll be receiving two books if a cancel my orders. Also these two different sellers almost had the same wording on what to do.
I'm still waiting for the first book to even see if it comes, and I'm still clicking request when their books pop up after they take too long to mail it.

Any ideas? I've been on here for well over a year and have never seen this. Then this happens twice in less than two weeks. Coincidence or is something weird going on?

I'm not sure how it could be a scam. Even if they purchase postage from PBS, they don't get an instant credit until they mark the book mailed. And, if they don't purchase postage, then they don't get a credit until you recieve the book.

There would be no advantage to printing the wrapper and not mark it mailed.

I think you are just getting a weird conincidence happening. So, they are posting these books to the Wish List and they are being offered to you? And then they print the wrapper but don't mark the book mailed?

If it was me, and I was to get another offer on the book, I would just request the book again. I wouldn't bypass another offer, seeing as how these senders seem to be flaky. If you do get another offer, and it's from the same sender again, after they sent you that PM .... I might contact PBS about that, since it is certainly unusual.

The PMs have the same wording because these senders copied from the Help doc "My request was canceled but I already mailed the book!", which says:

  • Paste this text (you can modify it to suit the situation of course) into the PM text box window

I mailed this book [Insert title of book] but neglected to mark it mailed before the deadline, and it was canceled. If you have an active request on your account page for [Insert title of book] it is not with me--it is with a new sender. Your request must have been passed on to that person, and you will get 2 copies of this book if the new request is not canceled. If you do have an active request on your account page for this book can you cancel it? You will be getting a copy of the book from me. You can then mark my book received when it arrives, from your Transaction Archive. If you are willing to do this I really appreciate it! Just let me know if you have a new transaction on your account page, and if you are able/willing to cancel. I am very sorry about the inconvenience. I am going to mark my books mailed before the deadline from now on!

I can't see any scam benefit from this situation CJ, and unfortunately 2 transactions (although annoying) is not really a trend.

What to do, hmmmmm....I'd be tempted to leave the books on my wishlist, but be sure they are not auto-requested.  This should give you a couple days cushion should the books be offered to you FIFO soon.  Then pm the senders and ask them to verify that the books are actually in the hands of USPS at this time, and if so do they have a mail date.

Hopefully, the books will arrive before you receive another FIFO offer.  I'm trying to remember if this situation allows you to mark the books received from your Transaction Archive, there were recent changes in the log-in process.

If the books do not arrive say, three weeks after you received pm's (or around the lost date of the original mailed date) - I'd be tempted to forward the info to TPTB.  Bad enough they forgot to mark the books mailed, but leading you on (and still not maililng) would really be over the top rude.

If it was a book I had waited a long time for-I would risk getting 2 copies.  If it's not posted every often then it's probably pretty slim that it would be offered to you within a week or two.  (and if I hadn't received the first one after 2 wks and got another offer-that first person would not be getting a credit from me).

If it's a rarely posted book, chances are paying 2 credits for it would be cheaper than buying it somewhere.  Plus you can post one right away although you'll pay postage to get a credit for it.

If it's a book that's posted regularly with a steadily moving line, I would put it on hold and chance waiting. Even if I had waited a long time because the line was long. You'll be on top and be offered the book probably soon after you took it off hold.

See that's the thing. Both of them don't take their book off of their list. So I keep getting their books back on my wish list. If they did mail it shouldn't they remove their book from the system? I just don't want to cancel, lose the #1 wish list spot and never receive a book.

The first one has been going on for a little over two weeks, and now I see the book has come up again for a third time. I keep clicking request because I want the book and don't care if I receive two books. I'll just put the other one up because it is a highly requested book. I just want to make sure I get it.

I wasn't thinking it was a money scam. It would be more like a bump yourself up on the wishlist type thing. Like I said two happening at the same time was weird after never seeing it at all.

Cathy A. - that must be where they got it from, although both were worded a little different.

Thank you to everyone for your input.

I'm still waiting for the first book to even see if it comes, and I'm still clicking request when their books pop up after they take too long to mail it.

This confuses me, it sounds like you may be requesting the book again. If they did not mark the book as mailed, you would have no reason to click request again since the transaction with them has been cancelled. If you are clicking request on the same book, you are requesting it from someone else. If they are reposting the the books, then I don't see the reason for their PM to have you deny the requests. If these are Wish List books, then you can place them on Hold on your Wish List so that you maintain your place in line, but do not get offers.

The only scam I can think of is that they have not mailed the book, but have somehow spent money on mailing it to you already and so they want you to accept their book when they get around to mailing it. I would probably give them about 3 weeks and them PM them that I would be requesting the next available copy posted, as the book does not appear to be coming, and if it gets returned to them or something they should not remail the book and should just repost it.

How could they be running a scam to bump themselves up on the WL?  You mean they have the book on their WL and keep making a phony post of hte book to temporarily move them up? That seems unlikely.

They could be reposting the book over and over again. But then you wouldn't see it on their bookshelf.  A WL book doesn't show up on a bookshelf.  It immediately goes on hold for the first person in line (or requested if the 1st person has it on autorequest).

They may be reposting the book to you to generate a new transaction. To prevent you from being offered another copy and to make it easier for you to mark the one they sent as received.

The books I've requested don't come up too often. The first time the first book (trader) came up  I requested it. I waited and the time for them to mail it timed out, I got my credit back. The book came up again and I requested it again. I waited, got the first "I didn't click mailed" message and the mail time got timed out again. Now it's up yet again, same person, same message. All the same book and definitely from the same seller.

The second (trader) book just happened today and that is why I posted about it, so I don't have any more detail on it. So that one may not be a problem.

I hope that clears it up a little. I'm not losing anything out of it. My only worry is losing the wish list spots.

Well that's frustrating. I'd be more inclined to call the whole thing "flaky" rather than a scam.

If this person keeps posting a book then not sending it over and over, that is a problem.

I myself might be tempted to send that person a PM that goes something like this:

STOP IT!!!

Sincerely, Lisa H.

I also might be inclined to report it if they do it again.

I would send them something like this:

"Please stop posting 'Book Titled X' repeatedly. If you have already mailed the book to me, you run the risk of posting it and having it offered to another member whom you cannot mail it to if you have in fact already mailed it to me. If you have not mailed the book already, please refrain from posting the book until you are actually willing and able to mail the book and mark it in the system as mailed. If you have already mailed the book and it arrives to me bearing a post mark showing that it was mailed already I can mark it received from my Transaction Archive and your will get the credit for it. If you have not mailed the book at this time, please let me know so that I can get the book from another member. Please review the section in the Help Center *Getting and Sending Books* and  you can contact a Tour Guide in Live Help if you are confused about the posting process.  My wish for this book has been tied up with your posting of it for many days now, I really just want to be able to get the book and cannot tell from your actions if you have mailed the book or not."

If you place it on "hold" on your wishlist, you'll stop getting the offers.  Once this is sorted out, you can either remove it from your wishlist (because you've received the book) or take it off hold (because you haven't.)
