Dana Stabenow has a couple of series, but the Kate Shugak stories have the most in the series. They are all set in the outback of Alaska. I really enjoy them, but Alaska has always entrigged me and a place I have always wanted to visit. They are about difficulty living in the outback and simple living of life.

Excellent story, does for me about Alaska what Tony Hillerman does for the southwest. Kept me on edge the whole time, stories within stories.

Deft descriptions of weather, geography, and habitation set this mystery in a world of its own.

Native private investigator Kate Shugak navigates the charms and pitfalls of life in an Alaskan oil camp, where she searches for drug dealers and a murderer. RPetCo's CEO wants results quickly, so Kate works undercover as a roustabout in order to gain the confidence of other employees.

This book features detective Kate, but also the pipeline business and Alaska itself as characters. Again, she is an Amazon of many talents, clever and resourceful, packed into a 5 foot package of guts and determination to bring the bad guys in.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, and an early winner in the series can't wait to find and read the others in the Kate series.

An oil company's rig north of the Arctic Circle is doing a brisk trade - in illicit drugs. Hired to break a deadly cycle of drug-induced accidents, Kate Shugak goes undercover to find a cocaine connection along the TransAlaska Pipeline. But these dealers know when they're being snowed - and they leave Kate to fight for survival against the harshest enemy of all: the great outdoors.

From the back cover: "Once, Kate Shugak was the star investigator of the Anchorage D.A.'s office. Now she's gone back to her Aleut roots in the far Alaska north-where her talent for detection makes her the toughest crime tracker in that start and mysterious land...
