When I was 16, The Coldest Winter Ever was one of the first pieces of urban fiction that I read and right away I loved it. Having read it again 10 years later, even though the writing hasn't grown with me, the story and the message still resonates today.

The voice that Souljah gave Winter is still there. She is well- written, raw and real. She definitely shares my blood and could have even been me once upon a time. She's the pretty girl with the bad attitude, incredibly clever and perceptive, but misguided and immature. Both her mother and father taught her that to be the best she had to have the best and the best man for her was one that would cater to her materialism.

Just about every character from Winter's neighborhood (including Winter herself) are prime examples of the crippling loop that minorities fall into in this country. We are not taught any better therefore we don't know any better, can't imagine any better and ultimately we won't achieve any better. But before I get carried away on my soapbox, I will just leave you with my opinion that Souljah has written an engrossing social commentary that is still a reality for many of our youths.

Since Winter was one of my first experiences with urban fiction, for me this book set the bar. 10 years later, having read tons of urban fiction (and ultimately giving up on them because any have yet to compare), this book is still the standard.

Pretty frank book written about the duaghter of a wealthy Brooklyn drug Lord. Life takes a devastating turn for her family and "Winter" is forced to use her street smarts to survive. Mature in nature of content and speech. For an adult or mature young adult.

Ghetto- born Winter is the young wealthy daughter of a prominent Brooklyn drug-dealing family. Quick-witted, sexy, and business-minded, she knows and loves the streets like the curves of her own body. But when a cold Winter wind blows her life in a direction she doesn't want to go, her street smarts and seductive skills are put to the test of a lifetime. Unwilling to lose , this ghetto girl will do ANYTHING to stay on top...
This book is a page turner. Never a dull moment filled with drama action and turmoil. I enjoyed it .

Rough language and sex scenes, but the book is still worth reading. Sister has an impressive gift for characterization. I almost cried when the book was over. She can make you care what happens to some rather scary characters.

I heard of this book years ago and never read it. Someone mentioned it to me again this year so I decided to read it to see what the hype was about. I have to admit I totally agree that this is an excellent read, hard to put down, gives you a look inside ghetto life for this young woman. Wonderful message. I would definitly recommend this book to anyone.

Hands down one of the best I've ever read. This belongs in more than one genre- it's not just urban fiction and it's not just one genre.
People other than urban fiction lovers will also LOVE this book- try it!

I reseve 5 stars for my top 5 books, but this one was well written from a new perspective. There are some key things that "date" the book, but it also lends an authenticity to that time period. Its about a life and culture most of us don't know about personally, but if you throw out judgement you can get really caught up in the character.

This was a good book with a shocking ending. Winter is such a niave girl. At times I wanted to reach through the book and slap her back to reality. This book will keep you interested until the end and makes you feel like you are right there with the main character of the book.

An interesting, yet emotionally detached, cautionary tale about materialism, greed, and the illegal drug trade. Fast read, but starts to get a bit frustrating with all the stupid decisions the main character makes again and again...

Great book. Interesting point of view. Strong sexual content, so I wouldn't recommend to young teens. My 12-year old daughter tried to read this before I did and stopped her since I wasn't sure of the content. I'm glad I did.

Very Good Book. Strong Adult Content. Author came off a little beside herself (in book), but being young and black, that's a good thing. Can't wait for another.

I really enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading her next book where she links this book to the Midnight book. I just wish taht she said what Winter went to jail for. I loved the ending. This is a great read. I would suggest that you read Midnight first before reading this one. GREAT GREAT story!!!
