I should have known better but I picked this up for $0.50 to listen in the car. Man, parts of this were so boring that I was rethinking listening to this while driving. (It was massively putting me to sleep.)

This is a story of a girls' coming of age. The first part is really just her day to day life with a neurotic mother, a loony, unloving grandmother and a missing father. Until the Spate's moved in upstairs, then life changes dramatically for Dolores.

This book hits on all the hot topics: rape, lesbians, gays, AIDS, abortion, adultery, divorce, mental breakdowns, lies. Poor Dolores just seems to go from one disaster to another, it just never seems to end. A lot of her problems were self-inflicted due to manipulation and lies. After Jack Spate, her life spiraled out of control and she became a depressed fat chick with personality issues. The story was horrible but manageable until part three with the shrink. Then it was agonizing as hell. This is not an author I'd read again. Just not my thing.
