One of the most powerful, memorable books Pilcher has ever written. You watch young Judith grow up from an awkward girl to a determined, strong woman. You see her truly come into her own, all through the back-drop of WWII, and all while her entire family is missing for years at a time. You appreciate the struggles Judith goes through to maintain a semblance of normalcy in life and you appreciate more the human kindness shown to her by the Carey-Lewises, whom you grown to love almost as much as she does. Warning: You will probably experience some separation anxiety when this book ends. I know I did.

As with The Shell Seekers, I could not put this book down. Rosamunde Pilcher is one of my most favorite authors and her books are so beautifully written, you just get lost in the story. If you are going to start with any of her books, this one I highly recommend!

This was my first Pilcher book and I didn't know what to expect. From the first moment, I could not put it down! Pilcher has an incredible writing style that pulls you in and creates multi-layered characters. A wonderful author and a great read! You won't be disappointed!

This is about a young girl named Judith Dunbar and the people around her. It's a sweet story about life at the very beginning of WWII (Right before it started). I liked the characters and the general story idea, but I had trouble really getting into it. I'm not really a big fan of historical fiction. You might enjoy reading about Judith's life as she's separated from her family and must live life with a wide range of different characters.

This is Rosamunde Pilcher's most interesting books with characters and relationships that are totally involving. A great English writer.

Set in England (actually some of it takes place in South Africa) from a little while before World War II until just after it. The main character is a girl in an English boarding school while her parents live in Singapore.

Quite a book! It brings in so many people and conditions and situations and global and national and social changes - and yet it manages to be very readable - and even take time for descriptions of places, the weather and what people were wearing.

I'm keeping my copy to reread someday.

I loved this book and I love Rosamunde Pilcher. Always a good story with beautiful writing. Even though I know what will likely happen next, she paints such a lovely world (even though this novel takes place during WW 2) that it doesn't matter and I look forward to the time I can sit down and read. It makes me want to get on the next plane to Cornwall.

25 cassettes long, but so worth it. This was a beautifully written story that never got bogged down for such a long story. Loved it! Donada Peters reads this audio book so well. She is my favorite audio book voice.
