Anyone know how to find people with bookshelves that are similar to your own?
You know, where it shows 50% similar or 15% similar.
The closest I've seen for me is 47%. I found him because I ordered a book from him.

Right now there is no way to search by compatibility...i have read past threads (cant remember where, sorry) that it is something they are working on for PBS.  I personally would love that myself!!

I was thinking about this the other day ... I'd love to have the ability to find those other members who have similar books to me.

Thanks for the response. I was hoping there was a way, but oh well.  :)

It's funny about those similarity things.  When it first started, I was lucky to find anyone with 20% similarity.  Then it went to 30 and anyone with only 25%  wasn't even worth looking at.    Now it's at 40% for some similarity and anything below that isn't.  OTOH - I have found a very few that I wondered why the similarity wasn't closer because I wanted or offered everything they wanted or offered...but still were in the 20% range.  So nowI pay little attention to it.

Ruthy, the more you rate books, the more accurate the similarity list will be. I have several on my buddy list that are over 50% and a couple even over 60%. And, of course, the more other folks rate books will increase those numbers also. It looks tlike they may be expanding this feature in the future so maybe a 'searchability will be added at some point!

Cheryl

This is from the PBS help docs on the similarity index:

The Similarity Index shows how "alike" you and your Buddy are.  it is determined based on the information you provide to the club through your participation.  So when you apply star ratings to a book, add an item to your Wish List, or tell us what your favorite genres are, we're more able to come up with a profile of you as a reader.  And as others do the same, we can start matching up people who have similar tastes and habits.

Right now, the Similarity Index is visible only on your Buddy List and on another member's Profile, but we do anticipate expanding this in many fun ways in the future.

To check your Similarity to a Buddy, go to your Buddy List (in the menu under My Account at the top of any page on the site, or from the Buddy List tab on the My Account main page).  You will see a notation --  Similarity: xx% -- to the right of each Buddy's name.    The range of similarity is from 0% to 100%.

Right now, most scores will be seem low.  This is because the Similarity Index is based on some club features that are still pretty young or under-used.  You can make your Similarity Index more powerful and accurate by applying Star ratings to every book you have read, and also choosing your favorite genres on the Member Homepage.

You can go into the forums for particular genres you're interested in.  My two favorite genres are mystery/thriller and historical fiction, and I found that the people in those forums generally have shelves stocked with books that interest me.  In the Jewish forum, we are known to check out each other's WL to get ideas too.

HI, Cheryl!  I've rated every book I can remember or have run across that I remember reading.  That's hundreds - over 700 at this point.  I'm sure that the number will increase over time.

The similarity % is also found when you go to someone's public profile.   I'm always disappointed when someone has no public profile.   That's one of the fun features that I like.  I've invited Buddies just because they did have such a high (relatively speaking) similarity % to me.  I'm sure some people wonder who on earth I am!  LOL!!  ;D

I was just wishing for this last night. I hope they make it a feature soon. However, it a;ready seems a bit quirky. I looked at someones profile & it said we were 60+% compatible and all but one book on their shelf was romance. That is the only genre I won't read. I even have it filtered. What's up with that?

How do you filter a genre?  I would love to be able to do that!

Nora,

Go to: My Account --> Settings --> Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. On the left side of the screen you will see that option. BUT it only works with the search function. It doesn't filter the genre when you browse a person's shelf. :-( I really, really wish it would though. It would save me a lot of time.

Ruthy, I guess it depends on everyone else doing the star ratings too--you have to have other people for the system to compare with. LOL I admit I am pretty lax in that department myself. About 90% of the people on my buddy list, I have no idea who they are or why they are there. I don't turn down requests, and I get those fairly regularly, but often there is no PM or note saying why they wanna be my buddy--and those are the ones where our similarity index is only 20-30% or something. Oh well! I'm easy. LOL

Like Ruth, I've been star rating every book I've ever read that I find on here.  I'm sure it's not that many, though!!!  But you have to rate a book before it lets you add it to the BIR list, so that should help build the data base, if people are really using that list.  Come to think of it, why DO they have that list???  Is it so they won't offer it to you when you search FAFIL?        D.

OOOOPS - that should have been FABIL!
