For the past month or so my computer freezes up while I'm on PBS. I come to the site & can go to 3 or 4 different pages, but then it freezes up & I have to completely close out & start again. Anyone else having this problem? I can visit other sites & have no problems, so  I don't think it's my computer. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thank you!!

I had to switch to Firefox 'cause my laptop was doing the same thing Leann with IE. It seems it started after the site did a major overhaul or something.  If you're using IE, you might try upgrading to the newest version (8?) & see if that helps. Otherwise, I highly recommend Firefox as a browser.

Leann, this exact thing has been happening to me for quite a while. I'm always relogging onto this site. I will be interested in seeing what others will say. Thanks for asking this question!

Leann,

I also have been having an occasional problem. Sometimes the PBS window closes itself?? I am on IE8. There have been other threads about this problem. Many suggest Firefox. I personally don't want to bother with another browser so I just open a new window an log back in. Hopefully, the problem will be fixed eventually.

Blessings,

Christina

Have had no problems with firefox.  Always had problems with IE (especially with viruses).  We never us IE anymore.  I say make the switch.

I had this exact problem at the beginning of summer.  I switched to FireFox and have not had any problems since.  I love FireFox and wish I would have switched sooner!

I had the same problem a few months ago.  It went away after I upgraded my Adobe Flash Media Player.  Don't know if that was the problem, just that it went away after that.  BTW, I use IE8 with no problems.

I use Firefox and have no problems. I hate IE. Firefox is much more user friendly and I love being able to customize my browser to how I like it!!

I had this happen several times a few weeks ago, but not since.  I'm still with IE 6, and have had some other issues as well, like bookshelves and wishlists taken FOREVER to load.  It got better for a period of a couple weeks, but now it's taking forever again.  My computer is old and temperamental, so I don't want to update anything at the moment.  I'm trying to hold out til fall to buy a new one since I really didn't want to get Vista if I can help it.

I use IE7 and have been having this problem for months (except not for the last few weeks, knock on wood).  Like everybody else, I just close the browser and reopen it and then all is fine, but it took me quite a while to realize that it was the browser and not the site or my internet connection.

ETA: For some reason, I have no problems at all and find that the site runs exceptionally fast if I'm on our old computer and use Netscape instead.  PBS on Netscape is fantastic!

I moved to firefox.  Same issue in IE7 - IE 6 didn't seem to have as many problems.   I would stay way from IE 8 (due to other issues and nothing to do with the site). I find firefox is faster and robust with this site and a couple of others and I have not locked up once.

Diane K. - I felt the same way that you do about not wanting Vista...  Believe it or not, if you want a new computer, that is the ONLY one available now.   I found this out in Jan. of 2009, and use it now.  It seems OK - I think they've done a lot of upgrades and patches, etc.

I have IE 8 and also have problems w/PBS.  It is frustrating to write a response for a thread here and then the computer hiccups and wham!  It's gone.  Sometimes I feel like I should copy it before hitting the "submit reply" button so it won't go lost.

How do you get Firefox?  What does it do to your other apps?

Not so computer literate...   :(      D.

Gardngal- depending up on what type of laptop you purchase, HP and Lenovo still offer XP, but you need to order online.  Any newer PC with Vista (which I hate by the way) make sure you get a free upgraded to Windows 7 when it is released - turnning out to be a stable OS>

IE8 just messed up a user that uses OWA whichi is Microsoft's webmail product.   He is running Office 2003 and couldn't open any files created in office 2007 and he couldn't access most websites.  I had to uninstall and return to IE7.

Here is the link for Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.5.2&os=win&lang=en-US

only difference between Firefox and IE is you need to download and install addons.   If you are installing flash - close the browsers before proceeding with downloads.  This is on a Vista machine.

It doesn't do anything to the other apps.  It just doesn't work with some of the websites - mostly microsoft.  But hey either does IE8 :)  Good Luck

I've used several different browsers here (FF, Safari, IE7 and 8, etc.) and, at one time or another, I've had the problem with all of them.  Turned off signature images and I've not had the problem since then with any browser I use.

I don't have signatures turned on - never had and have always had problems with IE7 locking up - especially if I am editing data, tags or flipping quickly between tabs or if I have more than one instance of PBS up.  Firefox totally fixed the problem - not to say with a new release of firefox won't causes issues.    IE8 - is having a lot of compatibility problems with mainstream websites  including their own MS products.   I would stay away from it unless you know how to trouble-shoot issues.

Jubead, thanks for the link!  I'm a little leary - guess it's worth a try.  This isn't a laptop, though, but a desktop model.

Bernard, I don't have animated stuff in my signature either.  but I guess whatever clears up a problem is worth doing.

I'm surprised so many people are having the same problem & I haven't seen anyone mention it! It driving me crazy!, but guess if I'm not the only one with this problem, I won't worry about it too much. lol :)  I have IE7 & just not sure rather to make the change to Firefox. I've seen IE8 & just simply didn't care for it. So I'll just keep freezing up & restarting for now. Thanks to everyone for your helpful advice!

It's been happening to me and I thought it was just me!  I suppose that's how other people felt until you mentioned it.

Don't be leary - the only pain with firefox - I find with firefox is how you have to download the add ons like flashplayer and such.  Other than that it works wonderful with most sites and is faster and not as tempermental as IE7.  Really stay away from IE8, I am finding huge imcompatibiltiy issues with the product and other websites.

Maybe PBS should note when signing up the site works better when using firefox.l Save a lot time for members.

There was a post about this in CMT a week or so ago. I was having this problem too and thought my computer had a PBS virus. lol. The problem definitely has to do with PBS+ IE. I don't know why PBS won't work correctly with IE all of a sudden, but when I downloaded Firefox, problem fixed.

I have both IE and firefox on my computer. I use to use Firefox mainly  for PBS, but lately I have been able to go to website, but  if i have to fill anything in, or go to a link, IE doesn't let me, so i go back to firefox and no problems.  Not exactly sure why it is happening.  Any ideas?  My daughter is only on IE and she is on this computer as well.
