Subject: Just so you know: the forums can be read by the general public now.

I found this topic on CMT.

I saw this too. I think it's a little scary, but I never post any personal pics or info here in the forums anyways.

So they are saying you don't have to be a member to read the forums?

Hmmm - we should check whether they're appearing on google searches now, then.

On quick look, they don't seem to be, but someone else should try.

I can see why some people might be concerned, if they post personal information in the forums.  I generally don't- I pretty much only post here, Games, Cooking and occasionally the Questions forum.  I know that some people are a lot more socially active though and may tend to post more personal information that they might not want out in the world in general.  So it doesn't affect me personally as it might others, but I think a lot of people are going to really think twice about how they interact in the forums now.

Here's something I wonder about, though: site rules are that you have to be 18 to be a member, right?  So, assuming that all of us are adults here, I think that we tend to post here assuming that minors won't be reading the posts, and sometimes there are posts with content of a more, shall we say, mature nature (such as the Guess This Book thread, or the one about funny sex words in books).  If *anyone* can now read the forums, doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose (or at least one of them) of requiring members to be 18 or older?  I don't think I'd want to be the site owner when some ticked off parent emails to complain about their 12 year old gleaning new terms for sexual organs from one of our favorite L&R threads.  Wonder if they have considered that in making this decision...

Was there a link or something?  I'm not seeing what this is about anywhere.  It doesn't make any difference to me whether this forum or any other here is viewable to the general public, but it's a good thing to know for purposes of safeguarding our privacy, I think.  I hope the links to our profiles are not viewable by non-members though.  Not that there's anything incriminating in mine, mind you:P  But some people do put a lot of personal information in theirs.

Kim, what people are saying in the thread on CMT is that links to our profiles have always been availble from Google- some said that they Googled their user names, and the link to their PBS profile was one of the first hits.  I don't have a lot in mine either, but yeah, I've seen some with lots of info in theirs, and that would concern me if I did.

Yes, if you google your PBS user name, your PBS profile does show up.  That does irritate me, but I don't have anything posted on mine except my age and First name and last initial.

Not sure why, but it still irritates me.

ETA: It can be changed in your privacy settings.

Ah.  Well, even that doesn't concern me personally overmuch.  Try googling rubberducky one time & see what you get:P  Yours though, Kim, comes back 3rd on the returns list.  I had no idea the member profiles were so easy to access.

Oh - LOL!  Edited to add: This wasn't high up on the list of search returns, but it definitely got higher billing than my PBS profile:P  Check it out:  www.shinyshiny.tv/2007/01/rubber_duck_vib.html

Wow, thanks for point this out, Bren!  I did notice a couple days ago that I didn't have to log in to look at the forum threads, but didn't think more about it.  I'm not sure I like the change, but I'm not sure what impact it has yet either... guess I'll think twice about what I write?  ;)

I can't even find my PBS profile through Google. Waverly is a pretty popular name apparently.

My nickname's pretty common, and if I google "Catspaw PBS" the closest I've gotten is a couple of other member's shelves where they've entered books with the name "Catspaw" in the title.  If I add my first name to the mix, a couple of my reviews come up, but curiously, not all of them.

All in all, I'm not terribly concerned.  Given the number of members, and how easy it is to join, I never considered this a private forum anyway.

I never considered this private either, once you post on the net, it's out there, so always be careful what post around is not really private.

I never consider anything posted on the internet to be private.  Even if it's a private, members only group.  Anyone in that group can copy what you say.

I always assume anyone can read what I post anywhere at all in cyberspace..

I'd order one of those if it wasn't for the boa:P  The crystal I can live with - as long as it doesn't cause any ouchies - but fluffy feathers on a vibrator?  Eww...

Oh - and you gotta love this:

"the duck runs off a single AAA battery, which means you don't have to worry about electrocution and the inevitable shame you would bring on your family when the newspapers "report that you met your end at the hands of a rubber duck vibrator".

I peed:P

Ok so I couldn't help but try googling my nickname and, well, I pop up. Not only for this site but since I use this name for almost all my online groups, clubs etc they all pop up. PBS, Shelfari, Goodreads, yahoo groups etc. It is a little alarming but not something I shouldn't have already known could be accessed. It is weird seeing some hits on reviews I have done. Some say even 2 members thought this review was helpful LOL.
